We are planning a non fishing vacation to your state this fall.  The actual schedule is yet to be determined.  We would like to take advantage of some fall color.  We plan to fly in to Portland, rent a car and make our way up the cost.  When would you suggest that we come?  What are some “you have to see places”?  Thanks for taking the time to respond.

Wife and I are off to Maine in July for our 1st visit, Bar harbor is our 1st stop and came highly recommended.

Before moving to FL I used to visit Maine either the week before or after the Columbus Day weekend. We left MA and would go up to Camden. The weather usually cooperated. The entire Maine coastline is great. Bar Harbor is not my favorite. It has become over developed and gets very crowded. The summer crowd leaves and the fall foliage crowd takes over!  😂

Leaf peeper season is right around the Columbus Day weekend. I have a house in Kennebunkport and usually don’t venture far, but Maine is a beautiful state and most towns in and around the coast is a sure bet.

Here's what I suggest, moving from south to north:

 

Portsmouth, NH: Cobblestone streets and a thriving downtown. Right across the Maine border. Worth a visit big time.

 

Ogunquit: Great food!

 

Old Orchard Beach: very touristy in a 1950s way. A blast from the past.

 

Old Town in Portland. Lively and great shops, but it is crowded.

 

Camden: The Jewel of the Coast. Two waterfalls tumbling into a bay with tall ships from the 1800s.

 

Rockport: Camden's little sister. Quiet and lovely.

 

Belfast: Great downtown. Artsy.

 

Castine: A quiet town with great architecture. Arching elm trees used to shade America's streets before Dutch Elm Disease killed them. Well, Castine still has more than 300 elms.

 

Northeast Harbor and Southwest Harbor: Two smaller towns on the island that has Bar Harbor. Both charming.

 

Schoodic: A gorgeous park with tidal pools and waves crashing into the rocky shores.

 

Eastport: Way up the coast, but one of a kind. It's faded, but gorgeous.

 

 

Note I didn't suggest Bar Harbor.

I forgot Portland Head Lighthouse, just south of Portland. It's a stunning lighthouse with walking paths along cliffs and you can see three or four other lighthouses from it.

The planners (wife and s-i-l) started looking at the trip.  It looks like we will fly into Portland then move to Bangor then branch out on day trips.
