I’m looking for some kind of clamp to add to a scale. I fish from the bank and backpack, so I try to keep everything lightweight and compact as possible. A friend is giving me the scales, and they sell for like $20. I don’t want to spend more on the clamp than the scales are worth. lol. I saw a clamp made by Daiwa that was like $60!

I’ve seen those plastic fish grippers being recommended. The grippers I see at local stores are 9”. I’d like to find something smaller. I know 6” are made, and I’ve seen even smaller ones on Ali express. I’d be afraid the ones on Ali are junk, but I see some that have the Mustad name that look interesting.

I’m wondering if anyone here uses something smaller than the typical fish grippers for this, or maybe something not even made for fishing, from the hardware store or whatever?

Rapala has a 6 inch grip

Yeah, I know about the Rapala 6". They're not available locally, and I'm asking about smaller stuff. If I'm going to have to order something online anyway, then the smaller the better.

Accu-cull mini fish gripper. It's $15.99 on Amazon, you may be able to find it cheaper. I bought it off Amazon with free shipping so price was ok for me.

4.5"

Perfect size

That looks good. You recommend it @heavyduty ? Feels well-built, sturdy, etc? No dropped fish?

I just purchased it about a month ago and haven't used it on a fish yet. I don't like hooking the fish through the gill with the "S" hook. It does feel well built and sturdy, clamps down strong. Rated to 50lbs. Has the holes already drilled in the handle to hang it on the "S" hook on the scale. I don't regret the purchase.

I use the accu cull mini as well. I have a lanyard on it for when I use it on the kayak (tie it up with some slack so the fish stays in the water before a pic or measuring) and use the other hole for hooking onto a scale.

Grips great and does no damage up to the 7lber I've clipped it on.

I bought the rapala one mentioned above at academy for $15 because it floats. The orange one that came with the kastking scale my buddy bought me fell apart the first time I used it

I bank fish and travel light as well. I use a landing net and weigh the fish in the net.

If you start weighing them the fish you catch will become smaller.

I imagine a lot of what is available out there is junk that won't last.

I use United Plastics' The Fish Grip.

I wonder if Accu Cull just slaps their own label on that. They look the same to me.

Yeah I read somewhere you lose one pound per fish right off the bat as soon as you buy one.

I just use a basic, heavy duty spring clamp. A few bucks each.

And for a compact, cost effective scale, I pair the clamp with a luggage scale.

Just adding this for anyone else interested - These are available on Tackle Warehouse for 12.99, but after reading some of the negative reviews on there, one mentions that the pins are made of plastic, which you can see in the illustration on TW, but the one @heavyduty is holding has metal roll pins as you can see in the picture. I don't know what to make of that. Is the TW image just out of date? The bad reviews are from 2019 and earlier. Maybe it was upgraded around that time.

One of the best groups to ask are kayak fishermen.

The serious ones immediately clamp the fish and drop it right back into the water while they get their gear straight, net put away, measuring board out, etc.

So they know which ones work the best.
