This is new territory for me. I plan to use 10# braid with a 10# 25' FC leader and was curious as to which knot will pass through spinning guides with the least interference. I was also curious about how both knots will lay on a spinning reel spool and will it impair casting. Any thoughts on this?

With line that light and spinning tackle I usually just tie a uni/uni knot. Even with something like 10 wraps each side the knot is tiny, no issues sitting on the spool or going through guides or line roller.

Fluorocarbon line is invisible? So a much shorter leader is acceptable  That keeps the knot from laying on the spool. Done   Use a shorter leader.

I’ve used both.  The fg is smaller in diameter and stronger.  I use 15# braid with 8 and 10# leader.  I use a 7-12’ leader so I can get some reties when I break off baits.  This is on 1000, 2000, 2500 and 3000 size spools.

I’d say 25’ is a little much leader… I’m not sure exactly how long of a leader I use. Depends on the rod. I try to get it where the knot is between the reel and the first guide of the train. I find it much easier to cast that way and the knot doesn’t catch as much on the guides bc of the momentum. 🤷🏻‍♂️

The body of the FG knot is the smallest, however when you tie the hitch knots at the end - they are on par width-wise with an Alberto knot which is easier to tie and extremely strong.

I really hear the hitch knots of my FG knots going thru the guides, never been hung up, but the claim of being the thinnest is not entirely accurate.

When I'm prepping the night before a trip, I'll tie the FG knot...if I need to replace a leader on the water, it's the Alberto.  This is even on light spinning tackle - 10# Sufix 832 to 6# InvizX. No problems with the knots going through the guides or even getting hung up on the spool - I run 8'-10' leaders to start, replace when they get to 4' or less.

When selecting leader length several factors come into play for me.

And when specifically talking about medium  and medium light spinning gear, the following is one of them.  When a big fish is close to the boat, and making at least a couple of hard, fast runs, in a last ditch effort to earn her freedom, where is the connection knot ?  A shorter leader might have that knot burning bach and forth through the entire guide train several times. And under quite a bit of strain.  While a longer leader, say 25 feet or so, puts that knot on the reel, usually before the fire drill even starts, and it stays there the entire time.  Meaning I am fighting my fish on just the leader. I use a uni to uni exclusively and with some success.

YMMV

15 lb braid with 8 or 10 lb mono and no problems with the alberto knot. Never learned the FG. Typically tie it just short enough that with the bait at the rod tip the knot never makes it to the first largest guide since that ones got the biggest angle on it with line coming from the reel during casting.

The best knot is the one your most confident with.

For me it's an FG on spinning gear.

But I use a max 6ft leader because I personally never want to spool that knot.

I've also tied thousands of fg knots so I'm confident.

Maybe this was my mistake all along. I never had an issue with my double uni on spinning tackle, but when using heavier flouro like (16- 20 pound) I was having a ton of breakoffs on casting gear. My thought was that each time I cast, the guides were weakening the knot. I made the switch to the Alberto 2 years ago and never looked back.

The braid covers the flouro leader and the knot is longer but much narrower. I have not had a breakoff while setting the hook since, so hopefully the curse has been broken. Worst part of the knot is tying it, but I have heard the FG knot is a royal pain.

I started to use the Red Phillips Knot it is small and strong ...goes through the micro guides nicely.

I have read probably hundreds, if not thousands, of posts on BR and don't recall ever hearing of that one....going to look it up
