Super User ATA Posted February 27, 2024 Super User Posted February 27, 2024 I have 13 Fishing rod(older version), I have it since 2015 and last night I catch good one in 4lb area and it breaks my guide, The guide itself is a micro guide and it is ok, But the connection to rod is detached. How can I fix it? Remember the rod is $99 brand new under the name of radioactive rods, so I am looking for a cheap fix 🤣 Quote
Super User MickD Posted February 27, 2024 Super User Posted February 27, 2024 https://getbitoutdoors.com/tutorials/ I would be VERY careful about using heat to remove the guide epoxy where the guide was initially installed. Better to try to get it off without heat first. Epoxy is not a thermoplastic, so it does not melt. Heat can soften it, but it can damage the rod structure as well if you use too much of it. I think every rod builder at one time has probably screwed up a blank by applying too much heat. 1 Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted February 27, 2024 Posted February 27, 2024 Rule of thumb for heat application to a rod is no more than you can comfortably handle bare hands. This is effective and leave a wide margin for error 2 Quote
DaubsNU1 Posted February 27, 2024 Posted February 27, 2024 I have fixed a few rod guides and tips. Mudhole is a good resource for parts and how-to. 1 Quote
Super User webertime Posted February 27, 2024 Super User Posted February 27, 2024 Did it just pop out? 1 Quote
Super User casts_by_fly Posted February 27, 2024 Super User Posted February 27, 2024 Its broken and not repairable (the guide). You need a new one, need to wrap it onto the rod, and finish the threadwraps. Its not hard, so watch the tutorials above and go gently with any cutting instruments or heat. 1 Quote

Beat me to it. 👍 You will be able to scrape away the epoxy over the thread wrap. Carefully use a razor blade parallel to the rod to get it started. The thread and epoxy will peel off. Use a plastic utensil and your thumbnail to scrape away the residue. See Mudhole for the how-to-videos, guide, thread and the little 2 gram packet of thread epoxy and you'll be good as new before you know it. Or do what I did. I needed to replace a hook saver and ended up buying all the tools so now I'm building a jerkbait rod 😁. I'm a tool junkie always looking to acquire new skills so I did this even though I know a great rod builder just 30 minutes down the rod who has done this repair for economically me in the past. Just figured: why not, I'll be breaking plenty of stuff in the future 😉. 1 Quote

If that’s the case then you need a new one. If that’s not right and the full foot is still attached (I.e. it just pulled out of the thread wraps) then you don’t need a new guide. But you do need to rewrap it. You can try to push it back into the threads where it came out but it will come out again. A spot of epoxy might keep it in a little longer and you can try it. But the only way to fix it properly is to strip the old thread, rewrap the guide, and finish it. 1 Quote

Tom This is a down and dirty diy solution. It’s not the “right” way to fix it which would be rewrapping it but not unreasonable. Could last a few trips or maybe forever. If you go that route, after you glue it in seal around the foot with some clear nail polish to keep water out of the wrap and use care with rod lockers 1 Quote
Super User WRB Posted February 28, 2024 Super User Posted February 28, 2024 Yep a fast and cheap way to fix a low end rod. If the rod has some meaning or value then re wrap the guide. Finding thread that matches maybe task! Tom 1 Quote

Dipped the guide's foot into the poly, then inserted it back into the wrap. Quickly removed it, dipped it again, then reinserted it. I felt this got enough poly down into the threads of the wrap, enough to where some of it pushed out. Cleaned up the excess with a q-tip dipped in alcohol. Poly dries slowly, like two days, but it's a strong fix. I've caught a few hundred fish on the rod after the incident while using straight braid. No problems since. Mine got knocked out when a fish spit a craw rigged on a swimbait hook, and it rocketed back at me and nailed the guide. Somehow the ring didn't crack, so it was an easy fix. Quote
