Considering trying the recoils on a fiberglass 6’10 squarebill rod for target casting docks and laydowns. Just wondering what layout you guys have used when using recoils on a build. My

plan was to copy a concept layout with a double foot 8, double foot 6, followed by 8 size six runner… 🤷🏻‍♂️

The size of the first guide is not as important as its height, and most builders like a size 10 double foot placed about 19 inches from the reel level wind guide, then the rest of the guides can be the same size.  Since recoils are a wire guide, (right? , no ceramic ring?)  I would consider a second double foot guide as you suggest.  Probably sized to be the same ID as the recoils.  Location and number of guides depends on the rod blank characteristics.  Use the two line stress test at this site :  https://anglersresource.net/static-load-tutorial/  Some think the two line test is more complicated than the one line, but the exact opposite is true.  Since the blank is loaded by the line to the tiptop and not the line through the guides, the guides stay put better and may be moved without unloading the blank.  If I were ordering guides I would order 9 plus the tiptop.  Rule of thumb is rod length + one, but I always end up with + 2 based on the static load test.

Mick, I think I will use one of the CERecoil as the first guide. Size 8. These have a ceramic ring. Would this be sufficient in your opinion or do you think I should still go with a second double foot guide in the train?

A size 6 recoil is large diameter and high frame. I’d go with a Fuji RV6 or DF10 stripper, recoil RSPG5 runners 5 Torzite tip. At least a ceramic tip top of some type.

Thanks for that. I saw an old thread on another forum size 6 runners but I could only find size 6 spinning guides. And I plan to use the CERcoil tip top

If you use a big (high) enough stripper you don’t need a second  reduction guide especially with the low profile reels today. No harm though either especially in a cranking rod.  I’ve used two DF guides just for aesthetics.

See DVT's comments.  I don't know the answer to this question.  I was suggesting a second one to get the ceramic ring, but I see that the Cerecoils have ceramic rings.  So I don't think a second double foot is necessary.

But what I would to is what I always do with casting builds, Fuji RV6, then 2 or 3 KB's, then KT's to the end with an Arawana SIC tiptop. All the KB/KT's and the tiptop ca be the same size, whatever you want for the build.  5 makes a lot of sense for something like this.

I'm going to go with the CERecoil size 8 double foot as my stripper. I’ll probably order a double foot size 6 and then finish it off with RSPG5 runners. If I don’t think another reduction is necessary, I’ll just go straight from the CERecoil to the runners.
