New to big bass fishing

Recently joined the forums and found out quickly that a surprising amount of guys big bass fish around my area. At first it was a little disappointing learning all these guys have been hammering huge fish in ponds only minutes from my house which felt in my eyes to only hurt my chances of catching one myself. After further thought however, I found it could be a great experience to learn new techniques/lures to fool some of these bass that have already been caught. I currently fish the south shore in small ponds/lakes from my crawdad and occasionally kayak in places where I can’t bring the boat. However, I’m struggling to find useful info on large baits that pertain to the shallow waters that I fish. If there’s anyone around the area of Plymouth/marshfield/kingston let a brother know,  cause I’d appreciate it a ton  if you could teach me a thing or two.

Everyones idea of what a big bass is varies a lot so let’s start with your goal, how big?

There are a few seasonal period where big female bass are the most catchable; the pre spawn as the colder winter water warms into the low 50’s and the spawn when those big female bass move up onto beds. That time period is now where you live and fish.

The next best time is summer nights.

In smaller bodies of water the biggest bass seek out an area with abundant prey source and good sanctuary.

Your job is to study your lakes and ponds to determine what is the preferred dominate prey source and locations where the bass can easily find them plus a safe place to rest nearby.

Targeting big bass takes work nobody local has a panacea lure or secret place they will share with you.

All we can do is suggest what is higher percentage lures and presentations.

Appreciate that a lot Tom! My goal for this year is a bass over 6lbs and hopefully that will happen this spring. This is my first year targeting large bass (any bass over 5lb) and I can’t say I have much to complain about(besides some of these insane swim bait prices). I started early fall of 2023 and since then have had a ton of 4s and only a handful of 5s. This winter I’ve made it a goal of mine to learn all that I can about catching big bass by starting to read In Pursuit Of Giant Bass, watching hundreds of YouTube videos, and studying bait fish such as herring and large shiners.

If you are catching adult size bass 4 lbs you are doing everything right. It’s just a matter of doing the right lure at the right time you have the location settled.

Upton Customs 9” worm T rigged and Double Z 5” lizard C rigged are good choices. I am a jig fisherman so that is always tied on.

I'm a Mainer and I also caught a bunch of four-to-five pounders in 2023. I also caught some five-to-six pounders, some six-to-seven pounders, and maybe two over seven that I didn't weigh. If you're catching fours, every now and then, you'll catch bigger ones. In the meantime, enjoy the fours!
