I know a lot of people use these as replacement hooks on their crank baits. I have great luck with them too. I enjoyed reading these reviews  on TW though. Most say they are great hooks, but some say they lose every fish one them. What in your opinion would be the reason people lose fish on them?

Too hard of a hook set?

Been using that Mustad KVD treble very successfully for 14 years now.

Can not speak intelligently as to why other anglers are not.

No clue what that's even about.

Either way, there's a bunch of pics all over this forum of several species of plus size fish,

(including my 11-11 lb PB Green Bass) that I've landed that were unable to overcome

the sheer greatness of that ewg treble.

btw - the Gamakatsu EWG Treble Short Shank Magic Eye is pretty good too.

Might even be better

YMMV

Cool thank you. I've been using them on square bills and mid cranks for about 5 years, and never had any issues. I guess everyone fishes differently.

I've had zero issues with them-ive been using them for 3 years now. I will say that I use glass rods and a soft copoly line. Maybe the "I lose fish" crowd uses a less forgiving set-up.

The only thing I do with these (and all EWG trebles) is bend the hooks slightly outwards so swipers get hooked.  I'm not a fan of hooks that point inwards. For me, they definitely keep fish pinned.  What causes me to lose fish is hooks that get dull.  Buy a hook sharpener because using hooks normally dulls them very quickly.

i run triple grips on every hard bait unless the hard bait already comes equipped with good hooks IE spro uses gama’s .  in the last 5 years i’ve lost very little fish on the triple grips.  since changing out my cranking rod.

only thing i can think of if they are bombing a crank out there with a really whippy rod.  when i was using a skeet reese crank rod i lost fish all the time to due the rod being so whippy and not getting a good hook set on long casts. my hard baits at the time still had triple grips. i like graphite cranking rods for small to medium cranks.

Me too, I prefer graphite cranking rods. I also unconventionally use braid to a leader. My rod is a carbon Dobyns 704cb, which bends really deep.

The Mustad triple grip is my choice for replacement hooks and on some hard baits that come with questionable hooks. I have used the short shanks on my lipless as an upsize replacement. I can't say anything negative about them. Do I loose fish? Yes, but I don't blame the hooks.

It's my experience that when fish are just swiping at baits(especially large swimbaits and cranks) these hooks don't so very well getting hook ups. If the fish gets hooked you are golden but they cause a lot of missed fish. Also, since they are short shank you don't have as much space between the bait and the hook - if there isn't a rotating hook this can cause some lost fish.

Overall my favorite trebles are round bends but there is a time and place for these as well - top waters are one area where I love them.

Every fish?

I would question that person's honesty.

Round bend hooks stick swipers, triple grips solid hookups.

Tournament anglers down here use round bends believing a hooked swiper is one they would have missed with triple grips.

Right?

If you miss every fish, I suspect there's operator error involved if they are being honest.

I took a deep dive into this subject matter recently.

Admittedly, I may me putting a bit more into it than necessary.

But maybe not . . .

This might be a reason for lost fish.

Been down this road once or twice before.

What I noticed was sometimes its not the hook but the bass.

I took two 1/2 oz Rat-l-traps in gold, black back, & orange belly. One has triple grips & one had round bends.

Probably caught 30 bass that day but missed several. The last one kinda irritated me, she was 7-8#. Thought I had a solid hookup, fought her awhile, got her to almost within net distance. She simply opened her mouth & the Trap came at me 90 mph.

I examined the Trap & noticed two perfect cresent shaped tooth scrape marks. She had the Trap in her teeth & simply open her mouth.

I noticed the same thing years ago with lead bullet weights. I knew how good a day I had by the scrape marks making the weight shiny.

We tend to believe we "blow" the bass's mouth open, when in fact they simply opened their mouth.

You remember which hooks were on that bait? I could see around bend maybe helping in this situation. I use both round and EWG. My Rapala Tiny 4 have round bends, and I almost never have fish come off. Some square bills have EWG some round bends. I guess the way I fish, my set up, and lakes just don't lead to me losing many fish.

The round bends 😉

They're good hooks for the money.  Sometimes they aren't super sharp in the bulk packs because they bounce around, but it's an easy fix.  I like them for cranks, especially ones im running through cover.  I've had some days where Ive struggled to keep fish on, but it's not typical.

Back when I figured out the benefit of the Mustad KVD 1x Strong 2x Short Triple Grip Treble Hook trebles for me, I went to look for them in bulk. Guess it was maybe 10 years ago.

Actually made a couple of different purchases off E-Bay of 100 hk bags for a pretty good price.

The number of the hook I like is TG76NP-BN.

What I received in the bulk packages WAS NOT THE SAME HOOK.

It was CLOSE, but not the same.

Points were like stock, sort of bad.  Also the material & color was different.

I DON'T USE THEM.

If you chose to go the bulk route (which I no longer do) buyer beware.

Check the serial numbers closely and make sure what you're ordering, is what you want.

Using a vendor that has a guaranteed & easy return policy might be a good idea as well.

I buy a lot of treble hooks - they are NOT all the same.
