Super User clayton86 Posted February 17, 2024 Super User Posted February 17, 2024 What’s everyone’s thoughts on this rabbit hole? They are incorporating it in a sense where I work. A few of us see it and completely disregard it and kinda brag about being better. They call it optimization at work and vary our start times to it since a computer tells them it’s best to start routes at X time and follow in a certain order to avoid traffic patterns and busy times. There’s days I crush time and mileage doing it in my own order that makes sense to me basically eliminating left hand turns when I can. Then other days I meet the time it says usually when stops push me to the 10 min limit they get or I say screw that limit I’ve got time and sit and wait for them to get their shipment ready. Then there’s the whole AI aspect in investing, selling, warfare etc. I just know at work they are trying hard to incorporate a computer program telling them the best times to start us and where to go at what time and order. Some guys follow it to a T and they are always the last ones in or run into issues on the road. 1 Quote

AI plots their routes now and, rather than having a single UPS driver, I get 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 drivers a week based on AI. AI determines what route the packages get loaded on. I don't know if this is working for UPS. The drivers are complaining AND, I can no longer tell my driver "Can you come by early tomorrow, my customer needs this part asap. 2 Quote

Friday actually was with another driver. Mostly because I wasn’t following the order it said he does. I was doing some of what it said to do last first. I was doing a few ATMs before they got busy on a Friday. I don’t get how a computer doesn’t see that when it tries to supposedly get us to spots when they aren’t busy. I was doing ATMs as it had him doing commercial stops all around me gas stations, Home Depot, Lowe’s, town hall collecting taxes. In one aspect it made sense when it had me doing the atm at the bank later in the day when the bank opened since BOA doesn’t open till 10am and closes at 4pm even on Fridays. I always knock out the ATM first thing I do in the morning that way when doing the branch it’s just one quick in and out when people are there. Quote
Super User slonezp Posted February 18, 2024 Super User Posted February 18, 2024 The only advantage the computer has, is the GPS. It knows if there's a traffic accident or whatnot going on. It cannot take into account every day delays or occurrence's and common sense. Logic requires reason. AI cannot reason. 2 Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted February 18, 2024 Global Moderator Posted February 18, 2024 As a person that ran a route for 17+ yrs, I know a better path than the computer every time. granted, not everyone knows every goat trail like me could be helpful at times, harmful at others for driving routes One of my new jobs has AI everywhere but they still pay me so I’ll ride it out Quote
cyclops2 Posted February 18, 2024 Posted February 18, 2024 Remember this fact about ...ALL....computer data and outputs from one of them. Their ...appearent logic... is really a combination of all the data put into their ...BRAIN ? ... Any bad or incomplete instructions ?? Dangerous crap outputs. It will always be subject to doing a crap job. Quote

TLHSS Posted February 18, 2024 Posted February 18, 2024 Be very careful not to throw the baby out with the bath water. AI is not a hammer with everything being a nail. Highly successful AI is a tool used in conjunction with a human’s vocation. The pairing of a human with an AI algorithm many times show better results than an AI algorithm alone or a human alone. A good example is the use of AI in reading mammograms to not only find cancer but predict the risk a woman has to getting cancer in the future. No one is replacing the radiologist … the AI algorithm is a tool used by the radiologist to better do their job. It’s also been found the AI algorithm can identify issues in segments of the population that a radiologist may have limited experience, such as Black women. So now medical diagnosis becomes an even playing field (something medical professionals in certain portions of the world struggle with). This is work that started at MIT if you’re interested in reading more. AI work like this is game changing! 2 Quote

Yep, in my workplace, they're training all of us on it, including ethics. I've discovered it greatly increases productivity and reduces mistakes in my own work. What I've heard over and over is this: AI isn't replacing people and jobs, but people that use AI will replace those that don't. 3 1 Quote
Will Ketchum Posted February 18, 2024 Posted February 18, 2024 AI will generate an output with the knowledge it has at that particular time, but sh** happens unexpectedly that it can't take into consideration. AI should just be regarded as guidance. 1 Quote
Super User Tennessee Boy Posted February 18, 2024 Super User Posted February 18, 2024 I think AI will change the world more than any previous invention. It could kill us all but I’m not worried about that yet. I’m a retired software developer so I’m no longer coding professionally but I still do it for fun. AI easily doubles my productivity. I really wonder how it will affect young software developers. There’s so much that I had to learn that they will never have to know. Does AI make mistakes? Yes but people have also been known to make mistakes . Could it take away all the jobs? Possibly, if it does the world will look very different and probably a lot better than it looks now. It will be interesting and a little scary to watch it all unfold. We are in the very early stages of the AI revolution. 1 1 Quote

AI is far far smarter and far far more dangerous than we realize. About 90% of our lives is run by computer algorithms already, and this technology is still in its infancy stage. In the past, humans did the work and used computers as necessary. We’re seeing that change. Now the computers do the work and use humans as necessary. Sobering, when you recognize that we rely on computers for our food, electricity, propane, healthcare, gasoline, etc…. 2 Quote
