Red/Orange Baits

As an offshoot of the "all orange / red" color crank / lipless cranking baits and chatter baits - dial back the orange / red color a bit . By this I mean if a crank bait try to combine green pumpkin and orange / red for a two - tone color affect ; if a chatter bait instead of an all-orange / red chatter bait use a green pumpkin chatter bait with an orange , red or flamethrower color soft plastic trailer ... There are times when I think we are guilty of overwhelming bass with too strong and too much orange / red lure color during pre-spawn .

Mr. Science mode on..... Here's some info to toss into the mix........

 

What bass can see is an arena that has me very interested. I've only begun to learn about it but here are several items that are variables in the equation.

 

Keeping in mind that we have trichromatic vision and bass have dichromatic vision:

 

Bass see in a broader spectrum than we do that moves into the UV & IR ranges.

 

A paint"s IR or UV reflectivity measured via spectrophotometry can vary from manufacturer to manufacturer and even from batch to batch. It's unknown if the IR or UV reflectivity has any impact on feeding behavior.

 

Color shifts at different depths and in different water clarity and angle of the light source will alter what bass see.

Red craw or Delta Red works for me on square bills. I just got a jerkbait that is a orange red color but I don't have any catches on it yet. The merthiolate or pink trick worms are hot baits till summer.

10 days ago I fished and they were still keyed on shad hardcore. So wierd. Smoking silver in lots of presentations, totally uninterested in red or (shhh) canary. I was really surprised.

Well I might as well give up one of my dumb tricks. It's not much of a secret as I have seen other guys do it. Here is my spring jig set up with a senko trailer. It's hot one minute and cold the next but it can bring the fish in. This particular version is a Berkley flipping jig in Amber Craw. I get the green pumpkin senko made with an orange tip.
