The pre rigged worm is what I started on and was a big producer for many years in my younger days. You can’t go wrong.

Another good option is a popper. It’ll keep their attention because they can see the lure and can have fun making it pop. Once a bass explodes on it they’ll be hooked on fishing.

Live baitfish.

Your best lure for catching  fish that have been caught & released at leased 1 time already.

A 1 to 2 " diameter float ball with a hook that is 2' below the hook IS A EXCELLENT way to catch fish on dead or chewed on baitfish. Hook thru the lips and forehead.  The baitfish then has EXTREME    SMELL and crippled action.   If you do not get serious float pull unders ?  There are NO  NO fish attacking there ?  Move immediately to another / different place.    Enjoy catching fish.    👍

Me and my son both learned how to fish slow on weightless senkos and caught some big ones doing it.

I'd wait til it's a hair warmer and give em a spinning rod with 8 lb mono, 2/0 EWG and a 5" Senko and rig it ULTRA weedless and tell em to throw it at stuff!

Pop'r on the same rig will show em topwater!

Beetle spin on the same rig will show em horizontal retrieve.

Tell them to retrieve it very very slowly regardless of bait type😎😎😎😎

First I would evaluate the "kid", as with any sport some catch on quickly from the start.

My grandson Aiden caught the bug early, his first bass was caught throwing a Fluke.

My other grandson Evan at 16 still has issues even touching a fish. You may notice he has gloves on & that was as close as his hands got.

I would teach em not only to cast but how to cast to targets.

I would let them pick the lure, show them you value their input. Start building that confidence early.

Creme Rigged Worm -- They still catch fish.

I have a friend who has been fishing forever. This is still his favorite worm.

Looks darn near like a walleye rig we'd fish here.

Spinners of almost any type & a meaty looking rubber behind it.  Works.

I started my kids off with panfish. Short rods with triggers spin reels. Worms and bobbers. Next I would move to Trout Magnets with barbless jigs and Trout Magnet floats. Then to weightless Texas Rigged senkos and smaller Keitech Fat Swing Impacts with weighed hooks.

Some kids simply will not have the same level of enthusiasm as we do.

Some kids are starters, some are bench warmers.

We have to adjust our teaching to their level of learning.

I am not a fan of Zebco 33 spin cast reels for kids with small hands. I know it’s very popular.

I made up a 5’ light power spinning rod with Zebco Omega 144 trigger spin outfit that can be 2 handed to cast and perfectly balanced.

Start with a practice casting plug no hooks. After the kid has the motion down then put on a lure with a single hook.

Small Keitech and jig or a split shot small 4”-4  1/2” curl tail worm works great for all ages of new anglers.

I am completely opposed to spinning outfits for anyone starting out - especially kids. When we are talking cheaper ones they tend to get loops and coils all the time. Zebcos are bulletproof for the most part. I can't express how ticked off my dad was when 7 y.o. me had a spinning outfit in hand and I had it all coiled and wrapped up out on the john boat. Lol

For kids something that keeps them engaged or focused. So a moving bait they can keep chucking out there or something under a bobber so they can watch for those bites.

The forerunner to a modern , slow sinking "spy bait"

Beetle Spins, Mepps spinners, Original Rapala Minnow

Can't go wrong with any of these. Cast them out and reel them in.

I think it depends on the kid, and the age. I've been working with my 6 y.o., and we are at moving bait phase. He can't stand still and watch a bobber, he wants to chuck and wind. Even at ponds where you catch bluegill on every cast with live bait under the bobber, he's not too interested.

I set him up on a rooster tail this weekend, and now am thinking treble hooks are a bad idea so I'm hoping this coming weekend to try either a beetle spin or wacky senko. I don't think he could set the hook well enough on a weedless senko, but maybe if I use a really thin wire hook?

I also got him a cast net to play with when the minnows start swimming along the bank. That's his favorite thing because he gets lots of little minnows to play with.

Most importantly, I think the key is to focus on them having fun, having lots of patience, and following their lead so when they're done let them be done. I made that mistake about a year ago and turned him off to fishing a little bit, but he says now he's much older and ready to fish like daddy :)
