Eric 26 Posted March 9, 2024 Posted March 9, 2024 @ol'crickety Those pictures are absolutely stunning and bring back great memories of my vacations in Minnesota when I was a kid meaning nothing around the lake but trees and animals. I’m happy for you and hope one day to find something similar for my wife and myself. 1 Quote

Super User Swamp Girl Posted March 9, 2024 Author Super User Posted March 9, 2024 Eric, I lived in Wisconsin for 30 years, so I know the look of MN (and Michigan and Ontario), so you're right about it looking like a Minnesota lake. "with traffic" made me laugh, @A-Jay! 1 1 Quote
Super User Koz Posted March 17, 2024 Super User Posted March 17, 2024 Congratulations on living the dream. I moved to the lake late last year and now that winter has passed I’m getting to really enjoy it. 1 Quote
Super User Swamp Girl Posted March 17, 2024 Author Super User Posted March 17, 2024 @Koz, I'm going to have a driveway built this spring that will allow me to drive most of the way to the lake. My contractor has to wait for the frost to come out of the roads before using them. It'll be about 450' long and take me to within about 200' of the lake. That's all I can afford at this point, but it's also all I'll need. 3 Quote
Super User Swamp Girl Posted May 28, 2024 Author Super User Posted May 28, 2024 I took some pics this morning of my pond. In order: The beginning of my 4.5 acres. Down my driveway. Another driveway pic. Where the driveway ends and the meandering path begins. The pond! The boardwalk made of pallets to reach the water. I might get approval tonight to have professionals build a raised boardwalk. You can't see it, but on the right side of the lake is a marsh full of bass. Heck, the pond is full of bass too. 12 Quote

That driveway only cost me five grand. He felled trees, removed boulders and 12" of soil, and laid and leveled 12" of stone. I think he did a great job at a great price. 2 Quote

I'm so happy you're making this all work, outside of family, friends, and pets......there is nothing more valuable than land imho. The only problem is land can be so, so expensive. 2 Quote
Super User Swamp Girl Posted May 29, 2024 Author Super User Posted May 29, 2024 Thanks, Alex. Taxes are only $350 per year and I bought the land for $75,000. That's a lot of money for a retired schoolmarm, but I could just afford it. The driveway contractor said I've increased the value of the land already by $40,000 because now potential buyers can see the pond. It also has many fine, old trees. It's my Heaven, so it's not going on the market. If you ever come to Maine, you'll need a place to camp and a canoe and pond to fish, after all. 3 Quote
