About a week ago, I was doing some work around the house that involved lifting some pretty heavy stuff. Everything was going well until the last effort. When lifting a small freezer to move it over to a different spot in the basement, I felt a "pull" in my abdomen, and in my stomach. It wasn't an actual pain, more like a bit of discomfort. I didn't think much about it at the time, and finished up what I was doing. I felt fine for the rest of the day and evening. Went to bed but woke up at about 3:30am with a pretty strong pain in my groin. It eased up when I got up out of bed, and eventually I managed to go back to bed and sleep. The next day things really hurt. Went to the walk-in care center that day to get it checked out. Found out I managed to herniate myself. I have one in my groin, and one in my belly button (who knew you could herniate your belly button???). The doctor "tucked" things back in where they belonged and got me a truss to hold things in place for the time being. I scheduled an appointment with a surgeon ASAP. Got in to see her today.  I am scheduled March 25th to get both hernias repaired.  In the meantime, I am on no lifting or serious exercising.  I guess my chances of early season fishing are pretty much shot now.  Surgeon says it will be a 4 to 6 week recovery time. Bummer. Getting old is not for sissies.

@Kirtley Howe lifting heavy items like freezers is bad news. I pinched my sciatic nerve trying to lift a gun safe about 3 weeks ago. There’s no handles and they’re heavy and bulky.

Hope the surgery solves the problem and your health returns. Fishing can wait.

Sorry to hear you're laid up.

Hope your surgery goes as planned

and you're back to feeling better sooner rather than later.

Also, we only get one chance to rehab correctly.

After that, everything else is damage control.

Exercise the self discipline to let yourself heal properly.

Doctors Orders.

Only way to tell if to get them checked out by a doctor who can refer you to a surgeon.  In my case the surgeon wanted to get the one in my groin done ASAP because it can get worse very quickly and due to size and location, it can get strangulated very easily....which would be VERY bad.

Get well soon.  My Brother in Law had a belly button hernia he nursed with trusses and stuff for years.  He finally had surgery.  He said he should have had the surgery as soon as it happened.

And here we go again....

Hernia surgery is now postponed indefinitely. Why you may ask? Thursday evening I was eating dinner when I felt a sudden pain in my lower back. Five minutes later I was projectile vomiting my dinner into the toilet. Within twenty minutes I was standing up holding onto the edge of a kitchen counter in a cold sweat, and barely able to be coherent. Lovelywife Melody called an ambulance. After a 30 minute ambulance ride from hell, I was in the emergency room. Long story short......they installed a stent in my kidney, put in a catheter, shoot me full of antibiotics and put me in a room. Seems I have a large kidney stone, and a major kidney infection. Stayed in the hospital until last (Monday) night. I am now home taking antibiotics to clean up the infection, and then on April 12th I go back to get a larger stent put in the kidney (to allow the stone to pass), and they are also going to use a lazer to break the stone down some. When all that is done, I will reschedule my hernia surgery. Looks like the start of my fishing season is pushed back even farther....

Kidney stones are pure hell!  I had my first one about six months ago and it wasn't fun.  The pain was bad, but the nausea was worse than terrible.  In my case, it probably saved my life.  The night I spent in the emergency room they gave me a CT scan.   The scan showed I had a kidney stone, but it also showed something else.  It showed I had a cancerous tumor in my appendix.  This is a one-in-a-million rare condition.  If it had burst open, I would have been in a world of hurt.  A week later they took out my appendix and I am back to my old self.  Thank God for miracles!

As the old saying goes, "God works in mysterious ways". Glad you are doing well.    As you mentioned, the nausea is really bad....and throwing up violently when you have a couple of hernias is a truly unique experience. I don't recemmoned it.

Got the hernia surgery(s) done on April 28th. I was very sore for a few days, but after that it was just mildly uncomfortable. I took it very easy as I didn't want to risk damage to the repairs. I am healing nicely, and I plan on my first fishing outing this coming Thursday. The biggest problem I am having is I still get tired pretty quickly. Apparently healing up from surgery takes more out of me at age 75 than it did when I was younger. Who'd of thought it?

I have a hernia just a couple of inches up and to my right of my personal pole, it is extremely noticable,  dr said i should take care of it, that was 2 years ago but it doesnt hurt unless i press on it.

Doc said if it lets loose it is extremely painful, i do squats and deadlifts so i may be taking a big risk by holding off.

I strongly suggest you get that taken care of sooner than later. The longer you wait the worse it can get. Because I had to delay getting mine fixed due to the kidney stone, mine had gotten larger, and the surgery was more drastic. Instead of a 4 inch cut in my groin, it was a 9 inch incision, and the one in my belly required having mesh installed instead of just tucking things back together.
