Two piece rods?

After breaking a two piece Ugly Stik spinning rod some years ago right at the joint on a hookset I've stayed clear of two pc rods ever since.  My question is, are todays 2 pc rods any better that those of 15 years ago?  Thanks and tight lines.

I now have 4 2-piece rods all from major craft.  I never think about it while fishing, they certainly have improved over the last 15 years.  I'm happy I gave them a shot.

I fish with BPS, Piscifun and Kast King 2pc. rods and have never had a problem. They are sensitive and stout. Kast King Perigee II comes with 2 pieces tips (MH and M) and can be used for light saltwater fishing, too.

2-piece rods from 15 years ago were still good rods.  There's nothing wrong with multi piece rods and ferrules are not a strength limiting factor (weight and action maybe, if not designed correctly).  My problem with 2-piece rods of today is that there aren't many of them!  I prefer 2-piece spinning rods because spinning rods are usually my truck rods for the spring.  I keep one in the back seat or the ramboxes all of the time from about now through the summer (which reminds me to go put it in the truck).

Most of my rods are 2-piece.  They work just as well as my 1-piece rods.  I used to drive a coupe, so 2-piece was my only option.  Now that I can fit a 7' rod in my car without having to hang half of it out of the window, I've been slowly migrating in that direction.  Mainly because most of the best rods are only available in 1-piece.  The biggest problem with 2-piece rods is the lack of selection.  

 

A couple of things about 2-piece rods though.  They work best in faster rod actions.  So fast, extra-fast, and even down to moderate-fast, they tend to work pretty well.  When you drop down to full moderate or slow, they don't do as well.  So long as that bend is above the ferrule, there's really not much of a difference.  And you might lose a hair of sensitivity in a 2-piece vs. a 1-piece, but you'd have to fish them back-to-back and pay close attention to really be able to tell.

One time 25ish years ago I was fishing a spinnerbait on a 2pc rod. I hooked a fish and as I was fighting it, the top section came loose and went shooting towards the fish. The line broke. I lost my fish and the top of my rod. That was the last 2 piece I have ever owned.

Five of my seven spinning rods are two piece...all were purchased in the 1990's when I needed two piece. 

 

They are all still performing well. No issues here. They are all Cabela's branded rods.

For fresh water I have a couple, both St Croix Premiers, most of my salt rods are 2 pc. The 2 pc rods were chosen when size is or was an issue. The fresh to fit in the RV, the salt cause they are way too long to fit in the car or truck.

 

I read somewhere that if you buy a good make/model of pc it’ll fish as well as a 1 pc. While the Premiers aren’t top shelf, I can’t tell the difference between that model in 1 and 2 pc.

 

i have also had the tip half go flying more then once, never had the line break doing so so no loss, you just feel foolish. Reminds me to check it more often.

I have several multi piece (3 , 4 and 5) piece travel rods.  Megabass, Shimano, St. Croix etc.  It's hard to tell that they are multi-piece rods. Rod design has come a long ways in the last 20 years.  I wouldn't think twice about pulling the trigger a two piece spinning rod. You do want to be careful about damaging them at the joints when it's "broken down".

I have switched all my rods to two piece. Way back when they would come apart on a cast, we'll the cheap ugly sticks anyways. My current rods are Daiwa Rebellion and Aird-X, two of each models, four total. None of them come apart or twist while fishing. Can't feel a difference between one piece and two piece. The two piece rods are far more convenient to transport for my family lifestyle.

I've had two-piece rods come apart when I cast, but never when fighting a fish.  Usually,  it happens when I didn't put the rod together when I started using it.

Modern quality multi piece rods are as reliable and functional as their single piece equivalents. Take extra care storing loose sections to avoid damaging ferrules. I suspect that was behind the Ugly Stick failure.

I use 2 piece rods when I have to for size restriction in vehicles, such as going with a friend in a small car. I've had several occasions when the rod tip went along with my lure when casting. Other than giving your fishing buddies a good laugh, it's annoying as heck.

Despite having full one piece rods, my 2-piece rods get 99.9% of the action because I keep them in my trunk. It’s a security and convenience and practical thing. 
 

If I happen to get to a weekend and fish with nothing else to do afterward, my big guns might be called to service. 

My 2 piece rods are sensitive enough and honestly, any loss in sensitivity versus one piece nearly nil and negligible.

I have a few 2 pieces, no problems. I carry two telescopic in my truck, bait caster and spinning. They are not the best rods but, but I can fish them.

I have a few Abu Veritas two piece rods I bought almost 10 years ago that I still use once in a while.  I've never had a problem.

Anglers hook fight and land, many species of fish that are far larger than bass on multi piece rods every day.  Multi piece rods will work fine for bass as well.
