Anybody using Marabou Jigs for bass?

Used to be a big time crappie fisherman and remember catching a good bit of bass on Marabou style jigs. May have to grab an old pack out of the tacklebox next time I head out and intentionally fish them for bass. Anybody else use them?

Ya, I keep Marabou jigs in 1/4 and 3/8 in my box and will occasionally toss them. Caught a few bass with them, but not huge numbers.

I love marabou jigs. I tie my own from 1/32 to 1/4. Catch anything and everything on them. You’ll be surprised how many saltwater fish I catch on a 1/16 ounce jig. 
A 1/4 ounce marabou jig is one of my go to finesse lures for bass! Light line clear water. It gets chewed. From dead winter in the coldest of waters to summer time. It’s super natural. I have a video of a bass eating one of my jigs a in December.  
 

These jigs just work man. Super natural action and natural colors.  When you pause the jig it will still move!  
 

I do a slow steady retrieve on bottom like bottom strolling. But will sometimes pause it.  Super slow on bottom works great to. Just bouncing on bottom. Lot of things you can do with it

Two times of the year I historically pulled them out and did well. The coldest depths of winter, and clear water, post-spawn wolf-packs or bank cruisers, but you can catch a few year round on them if you throw them regularly.

I'll pull them out on occasion when the fishing gets tough.  Bass certainly will eat them.  But it's more of a desperation move than go-to move for me.

I looked through my stash of stuff and only found one pack of chartreuse...so I happened to be in a town for work today that had a local mom and pop shop. Picked up a card of black/black. 

 

My waters are always muddy and cloudy. Most everything I fish is a dark color. Hoping these black ones keep up the streak of catching fish with dark colors.

Marabou hammers smallmouth bass!!   I love a 3/32 black with some flashabou in it.  Add a little piece of senko or finesse worm. Yummy

Thanks all for sharing. I've been thinking about getting some hair jigs. What colors other than black work for bass? Largemouth in particular. Not saying I won't go with black, just wanting other color options.

What's your water quality like? Clear or muddy?

My water is clear, so black and white are mostly what I use. You could also thread on a tail section of plastic worm, to get more action, and a bigger look.

A long time ago a friend took me to a small shop that manufactured small maribou crappy jigs. It was a one-man show and the owner was retiring. I purchased a 12-pack of jigs just to be "nice". 

 

About a week later the kids and I went to Ontario and fished the Ridue system. We started using the jigs I had purchased. They were incredible. We caught bass and crappy and many other species when nothing else worked.

 

We were staying at a lodge and the kids would fish from the docks. They were constantly catching fish when others could not catch anything. The other guests at the lodge were trying to buy the jigs from us.  

 

As soon as I got home I went to the shop. I bought every jig he had. I think it was a couple of gross. 

 

I have one left. I won't fish it and keep saying I am going to copy it but I haven't. It is nothing more than a hook, split lead wire, and maribou.

I was introduced to them by my guide while trout fishing on the Arkansas White River and I was immediately impressed.  The guide let me keep the one on my rod and a couple others that were trashed.  When back in Illinois I tied them on for Smallmouth and crushed 'em.  Next day I placed a sizeable order with White River Zig Jigs.

A black VMC Marabou “Flashabou” with the subtle tinsel in the tail is the bomb for smallmouth. That little bit of tinsel makes a huge diff. 1/16 or 1/18 oz on BFS is a hoot👍

I think of a black marabou jig as a finesse hair jig.  If the bass won't hit a hair jig I put on a marabou jig.
