Lucky Craft Man Posted December 7, 2006 Posted December 7, 2006 I use a Cabelas XML 7' Heavy rod with a Bass Pro Shops Pro Qualifier Round Reel and 30 lb. Braid Line. Since I don't have any swimbaits over two ounces, this outfit works really nice and is comfortable to cast all day with. I have several musky rods that I would probably use is I ever ventured into the larger swimbaits, but for now, the system I have works great. Quote
Lightninrod Posted December 7, 2006 Posted December 7, 2006 Get one of these rods. Very low-priced but the standard in swimbait rods for a lot of guys. Get a spool of this line in 20#(25# would be better) test Get one of these reels in the '300' size. Dan Quote
lubina Posted December 7, 2006 Posted December 7, 2006 For the small ones any regular H flipping rod can't do it but be aware most of them are rated to only 1.5 oz max. and you can damage the tip of you rod going any higher. If you can afford Linghtninrod set, that is ideal. I fish my heaviest lures ( Max 8" for my bass ) with the Okuma H 7.10, just b/c I prefer shorter handle but if you are OK with a longer the 7.11 H or EH are great. For reel I do OK with Shimano Cardiff 301 and line P-Line CXX 25 lbs and now P-Line Evolution. Quote
NJfishinGuy Posted December 8, 2006 Author Posted December 8, 2006 ok that setup is a little outta my price range ill have to figure somethin out hey lubina im guessing your the same lubina from the NJ bass anglers site right? Quote
mike bat Posted December 8, 2006 Posted December 8, 2006 hey if you really wanna toss the bigbaits you may wanna look at the redington rods ..... i talk to a known swimbaiter and he swears by the redington rod .... this rod will do it all ,,, and at 100 bucks a great value ..... i have the okuma 76 heav ,,, not bad but IMO the redington is a better value ... i lost a few hoggs last year as well as my PB ,,, using the okuma .... almost all where lost at my feet .... the redington offers a softer tip witch will alow you to keep preasure on the fish when its on a surge .... and believe me when they see you ,,, there running like crazy .... as for the reel i use a cardiff 301 ,,,, not a bad reel ,,, but there are better .... id really like a calcutta te 251 .... or a new cu 301 ,,, olny prob the 301 isnt out yet .... so ill more than likely use the cardiff another season ..... all in all you will need to spend 200 for a rod and reel ..... thats an okuma big bait or the redington ,,,, bolth will cost ya 100 ... and reel the cardiff will get ya bye at 100 ... so just plan on spending no less than 200 for a good set up .... they go up from there .... Super User flechero Posted December 8, 2006 Super User Posted December 8, 2006 If you want a good swimbait set up at a very reasonable price get the Okuma rod and either a Revo S or a Cardiff reel. The Revo has the drag and gears of a tank and cost a mere $99. And it also holds enough line that you can use 20-25 lb test. Been testing one out for a couple months now and am really impressed. I'll say this much, I like it better than my TD-Z BBS. (and it's only 1/4 the price!) Quote
Super User fourbizz Posted December 9, 2006 Super User Posted December 9, 2006 i bet i know who mike has been talking to My buddy swears by those rods and they definitely get the job done for a great price too. Quote
