Another reason why power boating schools and a watercraft license should be required.

Got enough government in my life already.

@TnRiver46 I raced motocross I analyzed rise vs reward the whole time. I don’t think I ever had it pop into my head I need to take an insane risk to catch fish.

@A-Jay am I correct in saying it’s in the boating hand book saying you should only travel as fast as conditions allow? I believe I read this from that. This would have fell into that as well.

@Koz most states require some sort of boater safety course to use boats over 25HP or personal water crafts.  I know the year varies. In PA i think it’s anyone born after 1983. So the last 40 years those individuals have been required. The point is taking the time to read and comprehend them or refer back to them. Much like a hunter safety course

it was an accident thst could have been avoided following many protocols. That does not make it any less sad. What it should do if make everyone refresh their boaters handbook.

I saw a video earlier.   Since it was practice I'm not sure BASS could have called it off due to fog.  In the end, regardless of promotors or sanctioning organizations we are each responsible for our own actions.

I was on Lake Wylie last year in terrible fog.  There was a fairly big tournament going on that day.  (CATT bass tournaments).   I was fishing up a creek channel a few hundred yards away when they had their blast off.  The horn sounded and ALL of the fast boat people just idled off.   They were also occasionally sounding their horns.    I was pleased, and surprised.

The Nav rules were established to address most every conceivable situation on the water.

And they do a pretty good job, including addressing safe speed.

Basic boat handling is fun, pretty easy when it's nice & calm and you're the only one on the water.

The more any of that changes, the more knowing 'the rules' comes into play.

Finally, and this is NOT covered in or any part of The Official Navigational Rules,

and that is 'the rule of gross tonnage'.

Basically means that even if a vessel has the right of way,

if the other rig would crush it like a bug,

it's better to be move and be alive than to sit there and die.

Your choice.

I Personally, I expect EVERY MOTOR VESSEL,I encounter on the water to run me down.

Accordingly I never give them the chance.

But that's my deal.

This is the way I approach being in my kayak and when on my road bike.  Being "right" doesn't matter when i am in a ditch on the side of the road or floating in a lake somewhere.

In Texas anyone born after September 1 , 1993 must have a boater’s education course to operate a vessel with that kind of horsepower.  Don’t know about Kentucky, but it seems like a good idea.

Per NC law.   "Any person born on or after January 1, 1988 must complete a NASBLA approved boating education course before operating any vessel propelled by a motor of 10 HP or greater."

I'm way older than that but took a course just to see what it involved.   The course.....wasn't very informative.

I wonder if any of these HS and college teams learn anything about boating safety before they head out on the water?  My guess is probably not.

It’s all sad, my condolences to everyone.

Most accidents could’ve been avoided, it’s usually realized after, not before……it cost a life and affected those that have to live with it.

I personally  know someone that was volunteering at this Tournament. They told me that not one boat should have left until the fog lifted which was late into the morning. It’s all about the money people, and if I was affected by this accident, I would hire the best paying lawyers. In the South, he who has more money, generally wins in court.

These tournaments are one lawsuit away from being dissolved.
