Super User A-Jay Posted January 30, 2024 Super User Posted January 30, 2024 Anyone have some experience with this newest offering yet ? Hasn't been out all that long. Both my 9 Blacks overheat regularly with the media mod on them and it's a PIA. Hoping that Go Pro has finally addressed this. What say you ? Thanks in advance A-Jay 1 Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted February 4, 2024 Author Super User Posted February 4, 2024 Despite zero chatter on this one, I'll offer my own update. Recent on line reviews are still complaining of the hero 12 black overheating. So I'm standing pat with what I have. There's rumors of a 13 black coming out in Sept 2024. GoPro has been using the same processor since the 9 black. The 13 is 'supposed' to be getting the first upgrade. Hope it takes care of the overheating deal. That is all. A-Jay 2 Quote
stk44 Posted February 5, 2024 Posted February 5, 2024 I wish I could give some input. I’m definitely looking to get a new one in a year or two. I have a hero 3 silver + that’s still going strong. Hopefully the 13 solves the issue for you. 1 Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted February 5, 2024 Global Moderator Posted February 5, 2024 One of the YouTubers that fishes my waters always says “I don’t use GoPros because GoPros don’t work” 😂 if it overheats where a jay lives it won’t stand a chance here, it’s almost always sunny 1 Quote
Woody B Posted February 5, 2024 Posted February 5, 2024 I've got a Tactacam Fish-i, It's not that great. The image quality is fair. You control it with a smart phone interface and the app is terrible. The Android app is unusable. The I-phone app is glitchy. Many times I thought I was recording but it had stopped. I was going to get a go pro but heard about all the overheating issues. I haven't even attempted to use the camera in months. Quote

Super easy, point & shoot, stabilization is crazy good and I have over come shorter battery life with external battery packs (Juicepacks) But here in lies the problem. Besides running the cameras for 4-6hours straight, I have a couple of accessories (mods - Special lens & microphone - all GoPro branded accessories) mounted on the cameras that also contribute to the overheating deal. Which only happens locally on the hottest days but is a real problem in Mexico, where it might matter most. Otherwise, my fishing & workouts, the dogs adventures, trail and runs across the lake are all shot without incident. So they do mostly 'work' just not so good in the heat of the hottest days for long shoots. However, the pictures alone can be worth the price of admission. A-Jay 3 Quote
The Baron Posted April 13, 2024 Posted April 13, 2024 I'm late to the party - I was about to start my own thread about GoPro's because I'm in the market for one, but thought I'd do a search first. My #1 reason to get one is the photos - I've got enough pics holding my phone at arms length, while I smear my cheek with fish slime trying to fit the two of us into another photo that looks identical to all the others. I want real hero shots like you @A-Jay and also it's likely just a matter of time until my phone goes in the lake, so I'd rather keep it safely stowed. I was thinking just buy a GP Hero 12 and be done with it, but maybe I'll try to find a lower model for a deal on FB marketplace. See how we like having a GoPro, and then upgrade for there. Q - how do you take photos? With a GP mounted on our console, can I just turn around and hold up a fish and say take a picture, or does the camera run full time and you just grab a pic out of the video? 1 Quote

Depending on what PC editing software you have, there's almost always a way to take screen shots out of the video. It's super easy even an A-Jay can do it. It's actually pretty cool as it allows one to really zero in on the exact perfect shot & angle. Admittedly, I take all this into consideration when I hold up a big fish for the camera. I use different views and different angles because it's hard to tell which one will be 'the one, until I start editing it. However in every case, if there is sunshine IT NEEDS TO BE IN YOUR FACE AND LIGHTING UP THE FISH. Anything else offers a fairly poor photo. So I will either turn the boat around or, relocate the camera or sometimes both to get the lighting right. So it's easy to see that not much of this happens by accident and planning ahead is helpful. Good Luck. 1 1 Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted April 13, 2024 Author Super User Posted April 13, 2024 btw @The Baron First I know I catch a bit of flack for this and it's been a running joke here for a while but; If you want the fish to look their very best in your pictures, hold then very close to the camera. I use a couple of goPro mods including a wide angle lens on my cameras which is a huge help when capturing as much as the fishing action as I can. It also allows me to get a close up of the fish and still have some background to work with. https://gopro.com/en/us/shop/mounts-accessories/max-lens-mod/ADWAL-001.html https://gopro.com/en/us/shop/mounts-accessories/camera-media-mod/ADFMD-001.html Here what the whole mess looks like on my rig A-Jay 1 1 Quote

That explains the origin of big fish stories. Quote
