Braid on a Spin Cast Reel ?

Looking to rig up a Zebco 33 combo for the kids - has anyone tried using say #15 lb. braid on a spin cast reel ? I usually use #6 lb. to #8 lb. co-poly line on spin cast reels and just looking to try something different for further casts .

For kids? I’d stick with what you already use or mono. Zebcos can cast a country mile with the right mechanics. I’d focus of teaching them proper casting mechanics and if they’re a bit on the younger side, you can teach them by example. Kids are sponges and pretty good at copying. 

My reasoning for this are for encountering snags. 6# is easier to break off than 15# braid. If you are intent on braid, then test just to make sure the zebco’s line catch pin thingamabob can pick up the thinner braid on the retrieve. I tried to put 4# mono on a spincast reel (not a zebco) and the pin couldn’t effectively pick up the line. Glad I discovered that in my garage than on the water.

Fine braid won't Cast on spincast, it's too limp for the ejector pin to let it go.  

 

I rebuilt a friend's Abu 170 and lined it with 6-lb YoZuri hybrid - even that was too limp for the ejector pin to release the line.  

With the YZH, it was easy to solve by adding a casting algorithm - pressing and releasing the casting button while holding the line (the line is stiff enough for the pin to then release the line), then pressing the button again to grab the line with the rubber bumper, and cast.

 

Proper ejector pin function is the reason Royal Bonnyl and Zebco monos are stiff and extra thick for their line test.

Braid will spool well on a spin cast. If you want try something different check mono lines from Runcl on Amazon. It comes in multiple colors and it might be fun for a kid.

I own two Zebco Omega Pros that I use. Regarding your question: the new version of the Omega Pro is built to take braid if the fisherman desires. Zebco recommends 10 lb. mono on the 33 and Omega Pros.  I use 12 lb. mono.

Thanks for the replies - perhaps best to just stay with a decent 8 lb. ~ 10 lb. co-poly line for a cheaper spin cast rig set up .

I  agree that with a couple special exceptions braid doesn’t work on spin cast reels. 10# mono is a good place to start for good line management and casting.

I tried it once upon a time and it was the only time that I've had braid cut into the rod guides. Outside of that it managed fine on the reel. I believe it was 30lb power pro.
