Super User Mobasser Posted January 27, 2024 Super User Posted January 27, 2024 This will be the first season I'll be using any bait dyes. I've been curious about them for a while, but just never used any. I'm interested in coloring plastic worm tails, craw pinchers etc, and see how it works out in my home lake. I've also heard that these dyes can be a big mess if your not careful. What's your fave brand of bait dye, and how do you apply it to your baits? 1 Quote
detroit1 Posted January 27, 2024 Posted January 27, 2024 I use spike-it markers in chart., blue, orange, and red. Almost every soft plastic i throw has some on it. I have never tried the brush-on kind though, too messy . I am sometimes messy. 3 Quote
Super User scaleface Posted January 27, 2024 Super User Posted January 27, 2024 I use the chartreuse marker most of the time on soft plastics. I run it the entire length of a worm, tube... It gives the bait a two tone effect and some extra flavor. I believe it helps, maybe not. Even on darker baits like june bug or dark brown . It doesnt turn them chartreuse but gives it a greenish hue. 3 Quote
Pat Brown Posted January 27, 2024 Posted January 27, 2024 Just caught a 9 lber on an oyster colored red eye shad that I put a black back/chartreuse stripe and a gill spot on. I use sharpies or whatever permanent markers look good to color my baits. I don't care if it's garlic scented anymore and I don't think the bass do either. I could never get bit when it was all white. 1 Quote
Super User Catt Posted January 27, 2024 Super User Posted January 27, 2024 Spike-It Dip-N-Glo Chartreuse Garlic Actually started using it 3-4 yrs ago when I found a bottle on the bank. What's crazy is since I found that bottle I found 2 more so I ain't bought none. Don't like the markers, don't put enough on. I dip just the tail or claws. Yes it's absolutely messy! 5 Quote
Pat Brown Posted January 27, 2024 Posted January 27, 2024 I definitely use the bottles for soft plastics regularly and I like all the colors a lot. I use blue, red and methylate in addition to chartreuse. Also don't sleep on the black spike dye on the back of a swim jig meant to imitate a shad or crappie. 😉😉😉 4 Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted January 27, 2024 Super User Posted January 27, 2024 I have been known to dip a tail or a pair of craw claws in chartreuse Spike-it from time to time. I use worm paint for a brighter and more long lasting application (no scent). And I use the spike -it pens to add a small 'target' to swimbaits on A-rigs. None of this has any bearing on my catch rate of course. https://youtu.be/j0tfw-dP3Uw?feature=shared&t=158 A-Jay 2 Quote
FrnkNsteen Posted January 27, 2024 Posted January 27, 2024 I use the Spike It dyes too. I've used the bottles and the markers. Bottles are easier when trying to dye the tails of a tube, swim bait, or end of a worm, but are messy as people said. Got tired of worrying about dripping or spilling on the carpet. I have a 4 pack of the markers in the glovebox of the boat now. 2 Quote

All I can say is be warned, I may post some pictures of open water bass fishing in the sun soon. 1 1 Quote

Solution rgasr63 Posted January 27, 2024 Solution Posted January 27, 2024 The best dye and scent package is in the JJ's Magic but it is the most volatile as far as leaking. I also have some of the Spike it chartreuse/garlic. The unique one that I use is the clear JJ'S it just puts the scent on the bait. It has worked out really well this past 6 months. I didn't use any of these last year but this year I have found that it helps most of the time to use it. 7 Quote
Super User Choporoz Posted January 27, 2024 Super User Posted January 27, 2024 I like JJs Magic a lot, but I don't take it in the boat. Kayak or Jon boat, I do. But, now I just dip baits at home and let them dry before taking them in the boat. 4 Quote
Super User J._Bricker Posted January 27, 2024 Super User Posted January 27, 2024 I’m also in the Spike-it marker camp. I was just trying to save a couple bucks and found I can “reload“ the dye in the markers by placing the felt tip briefly in a bottle of Dip N Glo of the same color. 2 Quote
ike8120 Posted January 27, 2024 Posted January 27, 2024 I also use Spike it, worm and chunk paint, plus the markers. 1 Quote
MeatHead1313 Posted January 27, 2024 Posted January 27, 2024 Another vote for JJ's Magic here too. I find it penetrates further and lasts longer than Spike it, although I do take some spike it pens in the kayak in case I need to dye something while fishing. Don't trust myself to not dump a jar of JJ's everywhere while I'm on the water 🤣 3 Quote
detroit1 Posted January 29, 2024 Posted January 29, 2024 Everybody knows that bass can't get enough garlic in their diet. 1 Quote
Crow Horse Posted January 30, 2024 Posted January 30, 2024 I use JJ's Magic and dip them the night before an outing. Dip, let dry, and zip lock bag them. If mixed together they will end up bleeding onto each other. JJ's is weapons grade garlic and is really powerful. I have to dip baits outside. I've used dipped plastics a year later and they still had a strong garlic scent. They are only messy if you are messy. I would never use it while in my yak. Good stuff and I believe it helps. I've used Spike It and it works well. The markers work well and are easy to use. I believe the JJ's lasts longer. YMMV..... 2 Quote
Crow Horse Posted January 30, 2024 Posted January 30, 2024 If you're worried about spillage, I made this dying work area so I wouldn't knock a jar of JJ's over and require Haz Mat removal..... You can make it out of anything. I used 2 cutting boards from Walmart. 1 Quote
