@NorthernBasser I always try, but just by looking, those probably would have been end of the day for me. On occasion I’ve gotten some that look horrid but end up being just 2 loops inside of loops. My oldest son keeps me in good practice these days.

Yeah, not sure what we're thinking. Kind of like those idiots who records themselves committing a crime.

Lmao.  This is a funny thread.

Maybe we should star a "show your backlash" thread that follows the "show your ride" and "show off your stuff" threads.

Don't record mine, but I've had a few doozies.  Been awhile, tho.

Impressive!!! The last one I had like that was when an unnoticed overhead limb stopped my spinnerbait dead just 10' or so off the rod tip. It was similarly epic.

If backlashing were a crime, we'd all be criminals.

I had one of them doozies when I snagged my fishing partner's line on my backcast. I had a spare rod with me and switched over, otherwise it would have been spinning gear only for the rest of the trip.

The old reverse thumb pressure technique

I think I saw Bill Dance video showing this.  I tried it once, but didn't work.

This is best I could do:

Standing under a bridge near DC fishing a swim bait and hit the bridge overhead with a zealous cast. Broke the bait and irreparable backlash. Day. Over. Whomp whoooomp.

@VolFan - the way it doesn't end your day is having a back-up reel.

b7hKHmj.jpg

My last backlash was Apr 2019, both casting into stiff wind and an invisible tip wrap with a 3/8-oz swim shad.  Swapped in my back-up reel and fished a banner morning, including a 5-min stroll with a massive flounder, but never could get the hook set after a dozen tries.

The best thing that morning, I put my friend Mark visiting from AZ on a hot tide pass, and he caught 20+ fish (the first 6 while I was re-rigging).

Noteworthy, that was my last day fishing fluoro - I respooled that reel with braid, and have never fished anything else since.

@bulldog1935 That was back in the days of having two hours to fish before the baby woke up and if you woke the baby getting out of the townhouse with your screwing (not fishing) 8 ft rods you weren’t going fishing, you were taking care of the baby. I rolled light and smooth. (I also rolled on only a few hours of sleep so planning well and coordinated movement wasn’t a strong suit). 😀

I need to start taking pictures.  I don't backlash often, but when I do it's usually epic.  I keep a spare reel in my boat.

A couple months ago I saw a bass under a floating dock.  There was a space but not very big between 2 floats, and an equally small space between the water and the dock.  I skipped a wacky in there perfectly.   I was standing there admiring my cast when the bass hit it.   It startled me.  I set the hook with the reel unlocked, and without my thumb on the spool.  The backlash was bad enough I couldn't use the reel.   I tried handlining it but it got off.

The bad one before that was when the lip pulled off a lure during the cast.

I don't usually get bad backlashes.   I'll get the line frazzled up a little sometimes casting into the wind.  I can usually just heave the lure with the wind to clear it out.

Greetings All,

So relatable. Much empathy.

Yes, I frequently resemble that. I'm a relatively new bait cast reel "user"? The skilled use is improving over time. Unfortunately there are those days.

I have a handy pocket knife at the ready. First is the the use of the toothpick to help with less complicated issues. If not, then going to the micro screwdriver or even the straight pin for some level of remedy on those tighter situations. Then there is the final solution with the scissor action as despair takes over.

I am getting better but the tuition paid in sacrificed mono is significant. It usually due to clipping an obstruction and not getting on the spool quick enough or the less than helpful wind gusts here in Southern AZ making things more complicated when I should be "recreating".

I just got my new annual fishing license and I'm doing my best to avoid those spool over runs. Be well and cheers!

yall have methods to undo all these messes? I usually just pull on loops and the main line and hope for the best!

Going to have to start taking pics. When I backlash its not when I'm practicing skipping...no...its when I go make my first normal cast after that is when I forget how to fish and everything explodes.

@Functional, I just yank on loops.

I have read many times about thumbing the spool and cranking the loops out, but it has never come close to working the dozen or so times I tried. The tools that I have used are a crochet needle, jig eye cleaner hook that is part of a multitool .... and scissors

@Functional @Choporoz The thumb pressure while reeling can on occasion help if the overrun isn’t overly excessive. Also, a line pick to grab hard to reach loops (Rapala clippers with the hooked pick works for me) can help a bunch. With that being said & frommy experience, there is no magic trick that works 100% of the time & it’s not as if I’m any sort of authority either.

Patience is the biggest key followed by finding where the loops are looped within themselves. Gently tugging & finding the place where it’s caught usually leads to a successful detangling. Try not to pull hard, that often just cinches loops down on other loops. Some can just end up being hopeless. Also, line can only take so much abuse (kinks, twists, stretches) before it’s just trashed, braid probably being the exception, but if it comes out, it can often save the day.

No pics, but ugly. Just got a new lexa 300 to throw some larger swim baits with. Took it to a lake Friday and started adjusting it. Well, slam - biggest I’ve seen. Finally get it all undone without having to cut it, but by the time I got to the spool, I had to cut it because it had somehow wrapped itself around and tied itself in a knot. This took a good 45mins. I had tied on a 6th sense 6” trace. It was hanging in the water the whole time. Once the hour or so was up, I started reeling in. And about 5’ from the bank, I got hung up. Nah, that ain’t happening son…rolled up the pants legs and waded out and got my lure. Was fortunate enough to be throwing on a 7’10” so I had that reach advantage…
