I was practicing in the yard with a  new to me reel the other day. It didn't take long, and I had about the worst backlash I've ever had in my life. I tried a bit and there was no use, so out came my trust Case XX pocket knife.

Not much prettier than a freshly spooled reel.

It happens but I have a new rule...... After putting fresh line on or when testing out new gear, turn the brakes almost all the way up and make some casts while backing the brakes off until you almost get a backlash (something you can control with my thumb). Then turn the brakes up one spot. This is provided the braking system on your real makes this applicable.

This has saved a ton in time and money.

Oof. I can't remember the last time I had one of THOSE. That's a bad one

The old reverse thumb pressure technique and that would have been picked out in a minute or less.

I agree, but only with braid. I've done this a couple times with fluorocarbon and it damages/fractures the line. I had a couple unexpected and epic "break-offs" later in the day 😤

This is the day I realized connection knots don't play well with Daiwa's T-Wing system. I had a pretty long fluoro leader tied on that day. I went to launch my bait and during mid-cast the knot got caught and the line snapped and this was the result.

one thing's for sure, if you have a line wrap on your rod tip, you need a whole lot more mag brake.

These are the type of lashes you just say screw it, sit the rod down for the day, and grab another. Or go home if that's the only one you have.

Never picked up another lews reel after those back lashes.   LoL.    They definitely were go home days.  In all fairness I used to fish between jobs while working if I passed ponds and rivers.  LoL.  So I’m sure I had to go back to work anyways.

I don’t think a reel has ever caused me to backlash. Adjustment/carelessness have always been the problem. I can only speak about my on experience.

Those are not backlashes, they are professional overruns!! 😆

That is overfilled by quite a bit. should be able to just see the edges of the spool. that will help stop the overruns too. Also BG is not very limp. Try a better mono like Sufix Siege or elite. it will cast much smoother.

I have a Lews Speed Spool that wears a similar fur coat.

Jeez you set the dial to 0?  That's difficult backlash for that braking system.

Pretty close. And the line breaking mid-cast with the heavier bait was more than it could handle. Thankfully I've yet to be able to replicate this. Knock on aluminum.

Lmao.  This is a funny thread.

Maybe we should star a "show your backlash" thread that follows the "show your ride" and "show off your stuff" threads.

Im not too proud to admit there’s a very good reason I’m half way decent at picking out backlashes & it isn’t because I was born with a magic thumb.

The thumb pressure while slowly reeling has saved many a day.

However, that one of @NorthernBasser’s & sorry but not sure what else to call it, that first explosion of @MiceNReets would have been cutters for sure for me. Been a long time since I’ve seen condor nests like those.

I didn't even bother with it. I re-spooled when I got home. 😅
