Winter's in Eastern Nebraska have been pretty tame the past few years. Only got out the snow-blower twice last year. Maybe three times the year before that.

November and December of this winter season were pretty calm...then January hit! I've been moving a lot of snow in 2024. We don't get dumped on like some locations further north, but the wind blows, and drifts can be difficult to cut through.

Moved to acreage in 2018, and found a gently used John Deere x750 over in Iowa...just 79 hours on the clock. One year trying to move snow with a old single-stage snow blower....decided it was time for something more. Found a 54" two-stage snow blower used, with the quick-hitch for my JD. It's been a BEAST. Added 75lb wheel weights and chains...but had trouble getting from the shop to the driveway. So now I snow-blow my way up the hill.  It's slow going, but works well.

Lately I've been snow-blowing paths in the yard...cutting through two foot drifts so the pooches have a place to walk and do their business.

^^^^ Serious Rig right there ~

Despite pacing itself, winter finally arrived here.

We're getting something a close to our average for the winter.

Comes out to an inch or so a day - for close to 150 inches.

It's like living in a snow globe for 4- 5 months or so.

Been stupid cold recently so I haven't messed with the cameras,

but this is some stuff from last winter.

As discussed in the winter thread, we’ve had pretty much zero snow until a couple weeks ago. I’ve never seen such a lack of snow so late into the year before, we usually get a ton in December from the squalls off Georgian Bay/Lake Huron.
Well old ma nature is making up for it now, we’ve gotten over 2’ in the last week and a half. The squalls are finally settling down ( for now), and I’ve been getting things cleaned up. I have two driveways, and a bunch of area around our barn, greenhouse, chicken coop etc to clear. Got all that done now, but I’m heading out in a bit to get some snow cleared off of some roofs, then I’ll fire up the blower to clear that away. In the past I’ve used a walk behind blower, but after two years on this new property, I realized it’s just too much to deal with, so this fall we got a 3038E with a 60” blower. I had a tractor with a bucket and back blade to use at my childhood farm, so I wasn’t new to tractors, but the blower on this thing is leaps and bounds better than the old Ford with the blade!

Almost seems like it’s too fast to clear everything up 😏

Ole blue shovel. They’ve plowed our main streets but all the neighborhoods are solid ice. We got 10” Sunday-Monday  and none has melted, most snow since 1993 . Lemme hold a tractor 🚜

@Way north bass guy OUTSTANDING set up you got there! What JD is that?

@A-Jay, tracked two-stage walk behind...EXCELLENT! Is that a Honda?

@TnRiver46, buddy and I were in Alabama when the big winter storm of 1993 hit...we drove back north through Tennessee...we didn't see many snow plows. I'm thinking you don't get much snow in your parts(?)

I’m on the coast, just south of Boston. We got 2-3” this year. I used a good ‘ole fashioned snow shovel.

@DaubsNU1, that was the storm! It usually snows once or twice a year but normally it’s 50 degrees a day or two later . This year it just won’t melt, it’s been more like -4 to 20 degrees. They have some snow plows but I’m guessing not very many of them.  Funny thing is up toward the mountains they didn’t get much at all, a strange flip/flop

We've only had dustings so far.  The total is maybe 4 to 5 inches.  The real problem has been the temps and the wind chills being below 0 for extended periods,

We've had about 2 feet of snow so far.

Edit - just  removed another 8" and 6" more expected tomorrow

@Bankbeater I lived in Kirksville for ~10 years...St. Louis for 2. Felt like we got more ice down that way? Those wind chills are not common for Missouri. Ugh.

We've just been getting dustings as well - broom has taken care of it so far...haven't even pulled the shovels out of the garage yet.

We got 8” last week. Another 4” yesterday. Some more dustings here and there. It’s not a lot of depth but my driveway is 120’ and has a 30’x60’ pad on the end.  It’s also concrete pavers so sliding a shovel along it is a real pain. I’ve used the blower 4 times now I think to keep it clean. Two stage craftsman I picked up on marketplace three years ago.  Best $250 ever spent. 24” opening and 9 or 10 hp.

As I've mentioned before, I now live in southeast Arkansas, nine miles from the Louisiana border. Last Sunday night/Monday morning we got a whopping 2" of snow topped with a lite covering of slushy ice. Our mail didn't run until Friday, schools been out all week, stores and restaurants closed for the majority of the week. "They" say that it's not cost effective to buy any removal equipment. SMH!

We’ve gotten around 2’ in the last week. 6poundbass, myself, and two shovels get the job done. Last Saturday took us two hours to do the driveway. I’m a tightwad and don’t want to cough up the money for a snowblower but after all that snow we moved Saturday I’m starting to reconsider.

@A-Jay, when I was around 12 years old I lived right outside of Escanaba for three years. My dad's job sent him up there for some project on their papermill. Anyway, I was amazed at the amount of snow and all the big trucks and other equipment that they had! Side note, caught my first smallie and only northern pike while there. Your pictures always take me back!

Nice.

I grew up in New England and before moving up here right in the center of The Snow Belt, I thought I knew snow.  Lake Effect snow ❄️ is a completely different animal.  2-3 inches an hour is routine. And it just keeps coming and coming and coming and coming and coming.  Turns out,  I did not know snow.

I don't think I've used a shovel yet this winter either.  Just my push broom.  The most snow I received all "winter" was way back on Halloween which was about 2.5 inches.  And obviously that all melted pretty quick.

The storms that other posters on here speak of have missed us to the south.  They've gone through South Dakota, Iowa, Wisconsin, and into the Great Lakes Region, and then into the Northeast.

Pretty astonishing that there's only about an inch on the ground here for January 20.  Especially after we set a record for snowfall last winter at 91 inches in the Twin Cities.

Looking at the 10-14 day forecast, I see no significant snow.  There is even a "wintry mix" possible which could be rain, sleet, snow or all three because temps are going to warm up.

Still have a solid 2 months of winter here but it's looking very possible that I may not end up using my snow blower once all winter - a first since I've been living here in MN.  I moved here in 1991.  I must have used it 20 times last winter alone.

I was up in Fargo about 10 days, @throttleplate area, and there was even less on the ground there.  Basically none.  @TnRiver46 has WAY more snow now than I do.  I can't imagine that happens very often when comparing Tennessee to Minnesota in January.

5 inches one day, 3 the other. I have a small 2 car driveway but I absolutely hate shoveling the grass.

Tracks behind the fence are from the family ice fishing this morning.

I should also mention that not only is there a serious lack of snow here, but it's been VERY warm this winter minus the past week or so.  We still had lakes with open water about 10 days which is unprecedented for the middle of January up here.

Lots of people going through the unsafe ice as a result of the warmth.  My understanding is that we're in an El Niño and that pattern funnels colder temps/moisture further south, while keeping milder Pacific Air over the northern tier.

We have had about 5" or 6" of snow so far and most of that came this past week. Using a 2 stage Cub Cadet snow blower. This year is the first time I have used it in 3or 4 years. Supposed to have highs in the 50s with a bunch of rain this coming week.

2 separate events within the same week.  About 6 inches total.  Mother Nature put it down, I’m gonna let her melt it.
