Your fishing style in as few words as possible (explanation allowed)

I'm a serenity fisherman.  You're most likely to find me away from everybody way back in the woods on a small stream than the hustle and bustle of drunks and their tuna boats on the bigger waters.  I'm blessed to have such excellent fisheries, but I really despise those who aren't fishing.  On Lake St Clair, most of us locals know to get off the water by noon.  Otherwise you're going to encounter some choice individuals and their ineptitude at captaining a boat.

Bad decisions.  

 

Before I hit the water, I carefully formulate plans A, B, and C.  I get fixated on plan A for far too long, and it rarely produces.  Then I move onto plan B and it may or may not get me a bite or two before I quickly abandon it.  Then I wander around and just waste time trying whatever crazy idea pops into my head.  Finally, after wasting the whole day, I remember plan C and discover it actually works, but I'm out of time and have to head in.   Rinse and repeat.

I was going to describe myself as a curious fisherman, but I like "serenity fisherman" even more.

It's great being back in the woods; the sights, sounds, and smells of nature are food for the soul and have many great mental health benefits.  Boats 'n hoes, not so much.

Quiet & alone...

 

Love fishing with my Brother and Dad. Love when the wife, and sometimes the pups join me in Marge (boat's nickname).

 

I manage a team, and deal with people and customers/clients Monday through Friday.

 

I cherish early mornings getting on the lake before everyone else, casting as the sun peeks over the horizon, listening to line peel off my reel...the ker-plunk of a lure hitting the water. I loves the whistle of wings, waterfowl soaring over head. The croaks of frogs. The breeze blowing through trees.

 

No radio. No conversations.

 

Move the boat a little to the left. There is the spot, that tree sitting in 4' of water, next to a drop off. Pitch the jig right there...pull out line so the fall is true. Wait. Wait. Is that a tap? Yes...SET THE HOOK!

 

Thrashing, angry bass fighting against my rod. Keep the rod tip high...if he makes a run, let him. Oops, getting too close to the trolling motor...work him in to the open.

 

Okay...it's time...gently now...rod tip up...grab the lip. Victory!!!

I fish from a kayak. For years I've been fishing the same 30 acre lake. I have no electronics so I've mentally mapped the bottom by fishing it for 10 years. I've also caught enough fish there to know what I need to target, like isolated wood cover. When that's not working I resort to blindly casting to areas I think might produce. When I go to a new body of water it's just casting and casting until I start to form a pattern.

 

But some of my best catches have come from "nowhere" places I blindly cast to that never produce again.

I really like that.  There have been so many discussions about the definition of finesse fishing.  I may just start using a different term for it that you’ve inspired.

Maybe bass anglers would feel less insecure about spinning rods if we referred to them as "Butt Smokers" instead of "Fairy Wands".

I'll settle into a spot that looks promising - then become a 'kitchen sink' guy...tossing anything I can think of that'd possibly work in that structure/cover. Some trips I've spent 2-3 hours casting within a few hundred yards of my initial stopping point.

Once the boat comes down off of plane the first thing I grab is a Texas Rig, Wacky Rig, Shaky Head, Weightless T-rig, Carolina Rig, Jig-N-Craw, Mojo Rig, Rage Rig, Drop Shot or anything that takes me to the bottom.

 

I'm gonna be casting, flipping, pitching, punching, hopping, dragging, shaking, dead sticking, or skipping.

 

I don't care if its grass, brush, timber, rocks, docks, pads, lay downs, shore line or off shore.

 

I don't care if its pre- spawn, spawn, post spawn, summer, fall, winter, morning, noon, or night.

 

Give me 2 rod-n-reels with any of the above techniques & Catt be happy, happy, happy!

Junk Fishing 101 - due to my home body of water being the Sacramento/ San Joaquin delta and multiple techniques can be successful during a given day.

 

Goldilocks - this could also be applicable given that being retired allows me to choose when and under what conditions I want to fish especially during summers triple digit heat. As opposed to when I was working and had a day off come hell or high water I was fishing regardless of the conditions.

I do whatever it takes to get the fish. If I have to cast a hundred times, then I'll cast another hundred. Catching is only part of it. Landing the fish, dehooking, releasing the fish (such with sharks). Fishing then becomes a 'package deal', which is precisely my style.

That'd be some wade fishin right there, getting in the thick of it. My first thought: ain't gonna happen down here in the everglades!

Focus completely, and endure solitude.

Stand outside myself to objectively evaluate the situation.

Remain free from detrimental personal habits.

I have a decent degree of stamina, and some athletic skills and abilities.

Wandering Peacefully

 

I want to catch bass, atleast one, each time the boat hits the water -- but outside of that I try to be in the moment (that does not come naturally to me, it's a challenge for me) , taking it all in, wandering peacefully out on the water
