Super User Swamp Girl Posted January 19, 2024 Super User Posted January 19, 2024 @Zcoker said that we should all develop our "own, unique fishing style" in the Old Timer thread. So, in as few words (Shoot for one to four words.) as possible, what's yours? My style is Sneaky Snake. Explanation: The longer I catch bass, the more convinced I am that they hear our motors and boat banging. So, I fish as quietly as possible. If my paddle or a rod hits my canoe, I wince. I even limit my headlamp usage. It's a thrill when you hook a four-pound bass five feet from you in two feet of water. 7 Quote
Pat Brown Posted January 19, 2024 Posted January 19, 2024 Dumb Luck. 😂😂😂 In all seriousness, I just try to fish the moment, for lack of a better way of putting it. 6 5 Quote
Captain Phil Posted January 19, 2024 Posted January 19, 2024 Great question. My style is to fish for bass one at a time. The road in front of my house runs along the shoreline of Lake Eustis, one of the Harris Chain lakes. As I drive by, I often look out into the lake and think about the bass. I think what it must be like to live there underwater. Do they know what day it is? Do they care? Biologists tell us all they do is eat and breed. I would like to think it's more complicated than that, especially when I can't catch one. My goal is to catch at least one fish. When I do, I'm satisfied. This may seem strange coming from an ex tournament fisherman? I remember all those times in my youth when I didn't catch a fish. I have fished all over the world and have caught just about everything that swims. Nothing makes me happier than to catch a bass. It's like.... "Victory"! 7 Quote

Super User Jar11591 Posted January 19, 2024 Super User Posted January 19, 2024 @ol'crickety throwing a bunch of different baits in a bunch of different locations. I usually do this to try and figure out what they want, but sometimes I never put together a pattern and end up junk fishing the whole day. On a typical day I may be throwing poppers over weed flats, Spinnerbaits along points, jigs into timber, frogs into lilies, drop shots on deep structure, and others. Some days I end up with like 15 fish caught on 10 different baits in 8 different types of structure/cover. 6 1 Quote

Whoa! I've never had a day like that. I do like catching bass on different lures and I like my five-lure days, but I rarely top five effective lures in a day. I wish I had 10-lure days. Thanks for the explanation. It was a good one. 2 Quote
Pat Brown Posted January 19, 2024 Posted January 19, 2024 Kyle Welcher is a really smart young pro who does a pretty long form video on this topic and I loved his explanation of junk fishing - he essentially says that it's throwing your confidence baits at different 'junk' or structure/cover. It's actually a very systematic approach and can really help you break fish down on a new body of water. Basically you fish everything that looks good with your main confidence baits and maybe you put a pattern together or maybe you don't but it's very fun and methodical and a lot of times you catch fish in all different parts of the water column in a single day! The name is misleading just like a lot of things in fishing. 5 Quote

Yeah, I didn't have a clue, which is nothing new for me. 2 minutes ago, Pat Brown said: a lot of times you catch fish in all different parts of the water column in a single day! Now, ^this^ is something I do most every time I go fishing. I'll catch popper/plopper bass, underspin/spinner bass, and crankbait/wacky worm bass, giving me top, middle, and bottom bass. 2 Quote

Super User Tennessee Boy Posted January 19, 2024 Super User Posted January 19, 2024 Great question. Took me a while to find the right words. Curious and analytical As I’ve gotten older it’s become less about catching them and more about figuring them out and solving the puzzle. Fisheries in general and bass in particular are fascinating to me. 3 Quote
Super User MIbassyaker Posted January 19, 2024 Super User Posted January 19, 2024 Kitchen Sink. Similar, but not exactly the same as Junk Fishing -- I have no preferred techniques, and on any trip I might throw anything. But won't necessary throw everything. 5 3 Quote
Super User TOXIC Posted January 19, 2024 Super User Posted January 19, 2024 Finesse Plastics. I can powerfish plastics but I am at my best finesse fishing them. I’m a true believer that big fish bite finesse baits. That being said, I’m on my way to Florida next week and I just rearranged and restocked my baits and I have every plastic from 2.5 inch Yamatanuki to 10 inch Ichi packed. 1 Quote
Super User T-Billy Posted January 19, 2024 Super User Posted January 19, 2024 Grinder. I have a handful of confidence baits, and I'll most generally grind all day with one or two baits that I have confidence in for the given conditions. Most days I can be found pitching the gnarliest cover I can find with a flippin rig, and chucking a moving bait of some sort in between prime pieces of cover. The past few years, a flippin rig and a chatterbait have put more bass in the boat than everything else put together. 6 Quote
