Hey Fellas.

I have an intermittent noise coming when I cast this reel.  I cleaned and oiled the bearings but it made no difference.  Can someone point me in the right direction for info on replacement bearings?  While I'm at it I might as well upgrade the bearings.  Are the ceramics still the best?  Haven't done this in a couple years.   If someone has a good video for replacing the bearings, I'd love to see it.  Any help is appreciated.

Did you break down the reel to get to the spool bearing in the handle side sideplate?

Some of those bearings in the Tatula are hard to remove.  At least for me.  So I'd try to locate the bad bearing and not shotgun all of them to potentially save yourself some money and effort and possibly damaging the reel.

But I'd just replace it with whatever decent bearing you can find.  I once upgraded a very old reel from plastic bushings to ceramic bearings and discovered no increase in distance, so long as the plastic bushings were clean and well oiled.  The reason being, you quickly hit a point where the bearings work too well, and you get a backlash.  So you have to increase brakes or spool tension to slow them down and find the sweet spot, kind of defeating the purpose of high end bearings.  So, from my experience, upgrading bearings isn't money well spent.  Also, ceramic bearings are noisy.  I didn't realize how noisy and how much that would bother me until I tried them.  Now, I'm not saying to buy the cheapest bearings in the world.  But something middle of the road should work as well as anything else out there in a fishing reel.  There's a time and place for high end bearings, but I'm not convinced that fishing reels are one of them.

look over these diagrams at hedgehog studio to determine what you need.

they're also a good source for spool bearings and tools you might need.

According to Jun Sonada, his empirical tests show the combination of upgraded bearings and bearing oil can add 8% to cast distance.

Couple of other things I would suggest.....

Clean the shaft of the spool real well. Also take a q-tip and pull most of the cotton off if. Wet it with cleaner and run it through the inside of the pinion. Sometimes junk can get in there and cause issues.

I've only replaced bearings in one of my reels. I had a Tatula CT Type R that got damaged. Had to order some parts to fix it from Tackle Trap. While I was at it I added a set of HedgeHog Air bearings.

I wouldn't say it necessarily gave much extra distance, but the cast was smoother and required less effort. Can't really say if it was worth the cost or not.

Worst case,... You could get replacement bearings instead of upgrades.

The most beneficial aspect of increased free spool is accuracy resulting from less force being needed to cast. Casting distance is affected by too many variables to attribute a significant, constant gain across applications. I’ve super tuned and installed ceramic hybrid bearings in a lot of reels and never seen one get wild or uncomfortable. In fact I’ve had feedback and experience to the opposite. Tuned reels tend to backlash less because of the reduced force required.

Many if not most before and after comparisons are made without flushing and oiling the stock bearings. That alone makes a noticeable improvement.  If you spun the clean bearings and they were fast, quiet and came to rest smoothly, changing them probably won’t cure your problem. Check that the brake inductors are free and working smoothly and spool tension is not too loose.

Did you take the shields off of the bearings when you cleaned them? Some of them you can take apart, others you can't. But if you can it's always best to so you can flush it better and check for deformed bearings.
