Line for jerkbaits, poppers and small cranks.

Decided to dust off the ol’ avid x 66MF and give it a whirl with jerkbaits, poppers, walking baits and small cranks.    
was going to use fluorocarbon but them topwater lures need to float.   What’s a good mono to use or would fluorocarbon be more ideal for jerkbaits and just use topwater on a different rod?

I would use fluro for jerkbaits and crankbaits.

Mono or braid to leader for poppers and walking baits.

Two rods would be a better option.

I throw jerks and cranks on fluorocarbon, and topwater on nylon. If I had only one rod for all three, I’d rather throw jerks and cranks on nylon than throw topwater on fluorocarbon.

12-14 lb supernatural mono. I run 12 for cranks and 14 for top waters.  Pick which is your preference on size.

You may want to try a line that's a combination of both. Yo-Zuri Hybrid comes to mind. Less bow than mono for cranks and doesn't sink as fast as fluorocarbon.  It's a compromise, but an alternative to two combos.

  I have some 12lbs YZH kickin around here somewhere.  I forgot about that.    i’ll have to give that a try.   Thanks

^ What Joe said - YZH has been my jerk and crank line for years. It's a bit thicker than the same pound test in Mono or FC....but it's also stronger. If you planned on 12# in Mono/FC, use 10# YZH.

I like 10lb fluorocarbon for jerkbaits and crankbaits. For topwater, if it's a bait I want to let sit still, I go mono but if it's a walking bait or a popper, I go with fluorocarbon.  

 

Last year I caught a ton on 6lb fluorocarbon and this popper.

Oh nice.    Good suggestion.   I don’t plan on using topwater that sit still.  Was thinking poppers and walking baits so good to know fluorocarbon should do well.

It will sink but it does work if you keep up with the bait. Some bigger poppers, like the Pop Max, I might prefer mono for the little bit of extra stretch.

 

I also will use braid to leader. I might start off with a big popper in the morning,  cut the leader off, and go to a frog later in the day.

I would use 12# mono as the happy medium here, maybe 10#. I usually use 12# fluorocarbon fo cranks and jerkbaits but often use 12# when fishing a jerkbait shallow which helps them rise but also because I use the same rod for poppers.

12 lb  Trilene Big Game green…it’s like Frank’s Hot sauce I use that      on everything.
