LCG Posted January 13, 2024 Posted January 13, 2024 I have a spinning rod from my uncle who passed away last year. I am thinking of wall mounting his rod and reel, then hanging family fishing pictures from the guides. Does anyone who's handy have any good ideas on how to mount the rod and reel on the wall securely, but still look nice? Will need support the handle near the reel as well as the rod blank as I want to create a curve in the blank. Thanks in advance. Quote
JackstrawIII Posted January 13, 2024 Posted January 13, 2024 Gave this some thought. Here's how I'd do it: - Assuming the handle is thick enough, you could pre-drill two holes through the handle and screw it directly into some drywall anchors. That would hold the rod solidly. - After hanging the rod, I'd tie on a heavy lead weight and let it hang freely to bring the bend in the rod. Adjust the weight until it bent exactly the way you want. - I'd put another screw right where that weight hung. Then you could tie the line to the screw and reel back down until the right amount of "bend" is in the rod. That screw could be hidden by whatever lure your uncle liked to fish. I think that would work. 1 Quote
fin Posted January 13, 2024 Posted January 13, 2024 A few screw hooks would do it. One in the bail arm, and one to support the rod tip. Put another one in the middle for a bend. That would allow you to take the rod down occasionally for dusting/cleaning. 1 Quote
TLHSS Posted January 13, 2024 Posted January 13, 2024 Go out to Etsy and do a search for “wall mount fishing rod” to see some pretty good options. Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted January 13, 2024 Super User Posted January 13, 2024 Here's how I'd do it 1/2" diameter wood dowel, 6 each 2" lengths 6 each 1/4" x 2" Dowel screws....they look like this Drill a 3/16" hole 1" deep in one end of each dowel and use pliers to thread the dowel screws in. You'll mount 2 below and 2 above the handle; 1 above and 1 below where you want the bend in the rod to end. Dowels can be stained/painted to match the wall, you can even round the ends that stick out. 3/16" pilot holes in the wall where you want the dowels, then just hand-screw them in. This method doesn't 'destroy' the rod by putting screws through it - and better protects the cork and finish of the blank than the screw-hooks do. 1 Quote
GRiver Posted January 14, 2024 Posted January 14, 2024 @LCG What an absolutely killer idea. Very thoughtful gesture and great way to remember your uncle. 1 Quote
padlin Posted January 14, 2024 Posted January 14, 2024 I like Jim’s idea using wooden standoffs then something like these https://mgs4u.com/product/tube-and-rod-snap-spring-clips/?attribute_pa_clip-size=5-16-inch&gad_source=1&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIyOqDotLbgwMVUkhHAR1M9QXMEAQYByABEgIszvD_BwE on the rod end of the standoffs, measure the rod for the right sizes. The standoffs would need to be big enough for the rod holders. If you hunt around you can find them in chrome, which I’ve used in the past. Kind of like the clips used for broom handles and such, but smaller. you could mount the standoffs right to the as mentioned or put them on a rod length plaque board with routed edges, what ever gives you the look you want. 2 Quote
Eric 26 Posted January 14, 2024 Posted January 14, 2024 @LCG I’m in the same situation and just took the advice of @TLHSS and wow there are some cool and creative ways to display them on the site. This is my favorite so far. Quote

This is my favorite so far. I did see these, but I would like to have a bend in the rod, similar to fighting a fish, with the photos hanging from the rod guides. I like @jackstrawlll idea of using a screw to tie off to for the tip section of the rod and using a picture over the screw. I think the tricky part is on the handle and reel section...have to angle it upwards to create the bend and secure it top, bottom, and front to keep it falling off the wall. I don't want to risk ruining the rod by drilling into the cork. Also want the support frame to look good or not see it at all. I suck at this sort of thing 1 Quote

I really like the idea of those clips. Nice, small, black, kind of minimalist. Quote
