DEPS_250 Posted January 12, 2024 Posted January 12, 2024 Does the Sunline Super FC Sniper have enough stretch/shock absorbing properties for fishing treble hook reaction style baits in order to keep fish pinned? I need a fluorocarbon line with a good amount of stretch since I like to fish braid to leader for most of my reaction style baits. After doing some research and reading some reviews, it seems like a lot of people really like Sunline Super FC Sniper for fishing crankbaits and jerkbaits. Therefore, I am assuming it should be a really good line for fishing reaction style baits. Just wanted to see what fellow Bass Resource members opinions on what the stretch is like before I spend any money. Quote
Super User WRB Posted January 12, 2024 Super User Posted January 12, 2024 I get a lot of debate over this statement but mono, copolymer and FC lines all stretch the same % under 1/3 rd the line strength. Braid being much smaller diameter stenches less under the same applied force. Of you use 12# mono, copoly or FC and your drag is set at 3 lbs that isn’t enough force to “stretch those lines. 4 lbs approaches the beginning of line stretch for 12 lb lines. Set your drag @ 1/3rd the line strength and forget about line stretch. What feel as line stretch is tightening the line bow in the water. Tom 1 Quote
Super User AlabamaSpothunter Posted January 12, 2024 Super User Posted January 12, 2024 1000% Been using 20lb since last late winter for big baits, but really just 7-9" glides. Outside of abrasion resistance, it's about as good of fluoro as you can find for overall performance. ETA: Have used 16lb for a variety of stuff for even longer than the 20lb. Great stuff. Quote
FrnkNsteen Posted January 12, 2024 Posted January 12, 2024 Not much stretch in a short little leader! My personal opinion is I want some give there if running reactuon baits. I don't use braid on anything with trebles, but if I did,.... Even with a leader, it wouldn't be on a fast rod. If no give in the braid, there should be some in the rod at least. If running braid,... I would suggest running a moderate to moderate fast rod. Quote

If no give in the braid, there should be some in the rod at least. If running braid,... I would suggest running a moderate to moderate fast rod. This is exactly what I am currently doing. I always make sure to buy rods that are slow and soft enough to absorb some shock since I like fishing with braid. I have one rod that I really like for glide baits and it's a little too fast and stiff for my liking for fishing treble hook baits. It's not flippin stick fast but I do wish it was a tad bit softer and more parabolic. Therefore, I am currently running a mono leader since mono has a lot more stretch vs fluorocarbon. On the other hand, I hate that mono is very thick and has a larger diameter when compared to the same pound test in a fluorocarbon. The larger diameter really hinders the action on a lot of hardbaits. Also, mono tends to have less abrasion resistance when compared to mono. I am a bank fisherman and I need high abrasion resistance since my line runs really close to rocks and cover. With that said, I want to switch over to fluorocarbon for the thinner diameters and for the higher abrasion resistance. I recently got a spool of Shimano Mastiff FC to try out as leader material on my reaction baits and I found the line to be too low stretch for me. I am planning to use it for bottom contact techniques and flipping/pitching only now. Sunline FC Sniper always gets really good reviews and people are always praising about its thin diameters and good abrasion resistance. Therefore, I was looking to get a spool to try out and I was hoping it would have some stretch since I am going to be using it as leader material for braid. Quote
GetFishorDieTryin Posted January 12, 2024 Posted January 12, 2024 If your using a lighter rod, Ive found that you dont need too much stretch in the leader. InvizX or even Red Label would work really well, they both have stretch. If you want a premium leader material that has some give and is a little softer than others try Yo Zuri HD. Its actually soft on the outside and has give to it, but somehow its tough as nails. I use it for light tackle jetty fishing and it kicks ass. Ive flipped 6 and 7lb stripers on up on the jetty with 10lb line lol. I think its knot strength is better then harder FC leader material, like Blue label and Premier. Quote
Lead Head Posted January 12, 2024 Posted January 12, 2024 I use sniper for a leader with cranks and jigs alot. It works great. I have landed everything from 4lb bass to 5' gar. A few carp (actually hooked in the mouth... apparently AR river carp are predatory) that were easily over 20lb, and more 8-10lb drum than I can count. 30 and 40lb suffix 832 to a 14lb sniper leader (25lb for jigs in sharp rocks. It works for me, Quote
Tackleholic Posted January 12, 2024 Posted January 12, 2024 For years I was loyal to Berkley Fluorocarbon 15# but began to wonder about the amount of stretch. When I would become hopelessly snagged and needed to break off, the line would stretch so much before breaking that it was a time consuming chore, no matter what methods I attempted; so I bought a single spool of 16# Sniper. Big difference, much less stretch. Quote
softwateronly Posted January 12, 2024 Posted January 12, 2024 **Totally misread OP's post, take it if you want** I use FC 100 in 16lb and 25lb most often, with a usual leader length of 10-20' w/ a fg knot. It's my preferred leader at this point. It definitely has some stretch to it, I'll find it sprung out every now and then, and trim back a few feet on the retie. I lean toward mod/fast rods as well to help w/ lack of stretch. It handles zebra mussels pretty well, almost always I'll find the knicks before I break off. Ironically, both dd cranks and jerkbaits I run on 10lb sniper or 7x7 tieable steel leader to help keep the pike thieves away. I just run a light drag and have been able to keep a good to great hookup to land ratio. scott Quote
msgf91 Posted January 12, 2024 Posted January 12, 2024 I like Sunline Assassin for treble baits. But I'm afraid I just saw posts online about it and wanted to use more Sunline since I like sniper. When I had to I used sniper just fine. Quote
