Swim jigs with no skirt

I’ve been really interested in swim jigs. Really excited to learn them this year.  So I was curious, any one use a swim jig head with no skirt. Just a swimbait on the back? Sounds like it could work. Something different. A swimbait coming through thick weeds!

Jig heads with swimbaits are very popular!

 

I like swim jigs when I want a big bite because they present a bigger bulkier bait fish profile.

 

If I'm desperate for a bite, I'm more likely to tie on a more toned down swim bait presentation.

 

I'm a big fan of the Owner Flashy Swimmer for something in between the two extremes that is very very weedless.

Yea I do jig heads on swimbaits a lot. But I’m talking about a swimjig head with a swimbait to fish swimbaits in the weeds without any hang ups. Definitely going to try that this year. Maybe add a bigger swimbait to the swimjig head

Oooo I like that! I had envision a swim jig with a weed guard and a swimbait! Never seen those heads before

Here's another option I run with 5"-6" Zman Diesel Minnows. The skirts are pre-made/collared that easily come off and go back on. Also a great head shape for fishing through thick weeds.

Post spawn I have a lot of luck throwing 6-7" paddle tails.  I cycle through open hook jig heads, beast hooks, and these large blade runner swim jig heads depending on weed growth.  They do make 5/0 style as well.  They get through cover pretty well.

It wouldn't have the paint and eye but you could do essentially the same thing with a T-rig. EWG hook, bullet weight and peg. Add a punch skirt if you want strands.

Comes in 1/8, 1/4, & 3/8 with a 3/0, 4/0, or 5/0 hook. Swim it, drag it, flip-n-pitch it.

Yeah i think I'm just saying (like all these guys) that some kinda EWG based design will be exponentially more weedless than a skirt less swim jig with a weed guard and will look more natural.  Whether with a keeper/screw lock weight under or out front, I find that these are much better when dragging swimbaits through very dense cover.

 

I still think it's harmless to try a shirtless swim jig!  I just LIKE the skirt part.  I think it's part of the appeal of a swim jig and why I would throw one.  I really do like the weight/punch skirt/hook idea a lot though.  Maybe this is the year I try that.

 

The flashy swimmer is a bad dude tho, they work so good in vegetation that's healthy!  Really nice just bumping it around pad stems and feeling a *THUNK* and seeing your line start to swim into the grass.

I throw a Ned version of this. A little Rage Swimmer on the back of a mushroom or ball head jig, no skirt.  It’s for when the fishing gets really tough.

I still can't believe all the skirts at Siebert! Also..If you need strands, feel free to thread your own.

 

Agreed with the EWG stuff. I used the Z-man Texas Finesse eyes. It's was my gateway to the Jika.

If you'd like to try an alternative to mushroom heads with 90 degree line ties or even ballheads for neds and small swimmers fished through heavier weeds, then take a look at these hooks. Notice the point tilts down towards the bait. Really helps with weedless-ness as skin-hooking doesn't need to go as deep. Barely at all actually. Razor sharp, so hookups are great. I couldn't fish neds around here until I found these. It was just too frustrating even with ewg type ned hooks. 1/8oz shown on the bottom.

Excellent hook. Have used it.

 

I also use the SV-46 often.

 

A Chebi Rig is another option.
