I’ve been doing quite a bit on one specific lake for a few years now and I’ve gotten to be pretty good at it. Need some back bone on the rod to horse em out. For some reason, I am more accurate and more efficient with the baitcaster. I am pretty sure I know your skipping lake! 1 Quote
Super User WRB Posted January 12, 2024 Super User Posted January 12, 2024 Off topic the weight of a 5” Senko isn’t the issue casting it with a bait casting outfit, it’s instant slack line letting the Senko do it’s thing sinking. A few years ago I was Senko fishing with friend who was using spinning w/yellow braid and leader and was using MF casting with mono, 10 to 1 bass I got my butt handed to me. His largest was 6 lbs with 2 in the 4 lb range. Mine were 2 lb bass. I went and bought bright braid with a leader lesson learned. Tom 1 Quote

I've heard people say theyll throw senkos on a MH baitcaster. Absolutely. Can you skip it better with a medium, yes but I can bomb on a senko on a mh baitcaster. Quote

Anyone seem better sensitivity and balance wise? That ml Tatula 7’1” rod is incredibly sensitive, light, and balanced. Great all around finesse rod Quote
Super User GetFishorDieTryin Posted January 12, 2024 Super User Posted January 12, 2024 Youre going to be overloading a ML with a 1/4 + plastic. I would go with a M at the very least. A lot of guys that are big into free rigging swear by certain JDM MH spinning rods. They have a softer tip with a stiff backbone. If I were you I would try that Tatula and see how you like it and go from there. If the Tatula is too heavy check out a MB SH or Enforcer. Quote

Again - it depends on the brand/model. Would I throw 1/4 jig with a 5" Senko on my Mojo 6'10" ML? No Would it throw it on my Reflexions A 7'0" ML? Ya...that one is rated 1/8-5/8oz...more of a ML-M than a true ML as it's top end is the same as my Mojo 7'1" M/F Quote

I throw metal up to 3/4 on my DS mojo for snappers in the surf, but I dont have to set a hook through plastic. The mojos are heavier MLs then the vast majority of them with a 1/8-1/2 rating compared to a rating that effectively over loaded above 3/8 like most newer MLs. 2 Quote
Bdnoble84 Posted January 20, 2024 Posted January 20, 2024 I love my ml/xf st croix bassx but i sure wouldnt be using a 1/4 oz texas rig with it unless i was in a real pinch. For that presentation i would definitely start at medium action. As I said i love my bassx but ive never used anything higher end than that. For me and my budget that was a high end rod (i know that in reality it isnt). Im really not sure how much more i could gain going more expensive. I use it for 1/16 to 1/4 hair jigs and I love the feel and an occasional wacky rig or ned rig. Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted January 20, 2024 Super User Posted January 20, 2024 With a 1/4 weight, I would use an M or MH. Especially if you are going to be fishing it around heavy cover. Quote
