Super User Jig Man Posted January 9, 2024 Super User Posted January 9, 2024 I got one a few days ago and have been getting familiar with it. I typically use 15# braid with 10 or 12# fluorocarbon leaders. I normally do 16 wraps on each side. With the tool do you do the same wraps as you did without it? After you do the half hitch with the leader, do you tighten the knot like before the tool? How many half hitches do you put on? Do you use a risotto finish? As a side note I have had 5 hand surgeries and keep losing the leader so I made a tool to hold it. So far it is working. Quote
garroyo130 Posted January 9, 2024 Posted January 9, 2024 For me, same number of wraps as before. I do not do any half hitches. I carefully remove the line from the tool, making sure it doesn't undo and then tie a Rizzutto finish. I tighten as I did before, pulling both ends of the braid lightly first, then pulling the leader and braid apart hard. Clip ends with about 1/8" tag, burn leader end to a bulb, burn braid end to keep from fraying. Quote
Crow Horse Posted January 14, 2024 Posted January 14, 2024 I too have been practicing with the Daiichi Knot Assist tool. I haven't been able to tie the FG knot without the tool and the tool makes it very doable for me. Using instructions found on YouTube, this is how I'm doing it. 10 wraps finished off with a locking half hitch. Reposition the lines in the tool and do 6 alternating half hitches. Cut tag end of leader and then 4 more alternating half hitches. Finish off with the Rizzuto finish. The resulting knot is thin and seems to be extremely strong. I have no practical experience with it while fishing and that will have to wait till spring. In the mean time I'll keep practicing. I bought a second tool that I'll keep on my yak. I feel confident now that if I have to retie while on the water, using the tool I'll be able to do it. Hope this helps and hope that I'm tying it correctly. Quote
softwateronly Posted January 14, 2024 Posted January 14, 2024 @Crow Horse Sounds like we do it similarly. The only thing you didn't mention that I think is critical, is setting the knot. When I'm done with my wraps and 2 locking half hitches, I put the knot under heavy pressure. Usually you'll see the wraps/knot bite and change color. Then I snip the extra leader and continue on like you said. scott Quote
