Super User WRB Posted January 6, 2024 Super User Posted January 6, 2024 When I was 34 discovered my LDL (17) was very low and gall bladder plugged. Instead of surgery my DR put me on a “if it taste good spit it out” diet. 3 months the gall bladder was working normal. Since that time my diet has been low carbs, low sugar, good red meat in lieu of hamburgers, grilled fish, pork and chicken. Body fat and weight gain hasn’t been an issue. When you eat food with fat or carbs save them for special meals. The Mayo suggestions are spot on👍. I live in hilly mountainous terrain and always must walk uphill returning home, keeps my legs shape. Really need to get back to weight resistance training instead of drinking wine after dinner. Muscle mass is heavier then body fat so weight alone doesn’t mean healthy, just haven’t gained weight but may gained fat. My blood work gets checked every 6 months and prone to being diabetic, so far haven’t joined that club! Happy New Year all, stay in shape. Tom 4 Quote

The long hours they work leaves most making the choice to not make time for getting/staying in shape. The same it true for a bunch of professions. It's easy for people who work long hours, especially those with fairly physical jobs to not make time for targeted workouts. (this includes myself) Notice I say "make time". For most who "don't have time" it's just a choice. (including myself) Regarding a gym membership, a comedian said "I'm not going to pay someone to let me pick up heavy stuff after I've worked all day". I applaud AJ's and others dedication to staying in shape. It's a choice many of us "should" make. 4 1 Quote

bp_fowler Posted January 6, 2024 Posted January 6, 2024 I spent most of my adult life in the military and now I’m a Firefighter/EMT. Both careers where physical fitness is highly encouraged for obvious reasons. I’m also very fortunate that I have mostly avoided major illness or injury until this point in my life (knock on wood). I don’t really do anything too fancy. I just try to do something physically challenging more days than I don’t. Sometimes I lift and sometimes I run. Sometimes I just go for a 1-2 mile walk. I try not to eat too much junk food and drink too much beer. I try to stay hydrated and get enough sleep. I guess you can make it as complicated or as simple as you like. I choose to keep it simple. 3 Quote

Perhaps. Ozempic is a much higher dose though. Almost 3 times the semaglutide than Wegovy and very likely why it costs a lot more too. 2 Quote

Super User PhishLI Posted January 7, 2024 Super User Posted January 7, 2024 I stay in good yak shape it seems. I feel fine afterward even after the first trip of the year. However, nothing gets me in wading condition other than wading. It takes me a few weeks of going consistently before I don't feel beat up. Typical resistance training doesn't really replicate climbing 2-3 feet down then back up undercut banks on odd angles weighed down with at least 20 lbs of gear plus fully soaked wading boots often covered in weeds. I have to wear my tackle bags out into the water. There are insane numbers of spiders on the ground here and chiggers are nothing I'm interested in dealing with. There are very few places around my lakes where the shoreline is in-plane with the water where I can stroll right in. It's mostly sheer drops as I described or steep banks crisscrossed with roots. Plenty of ways to faceplant or worse on the way down or up, so muscles get used that never get used otherwise when dealing with unusual angles while trying to steady myself going in and out. I fished way less than usual last season because I was just trying to fully heal up from a few niggling rehab'd injuries, so I'd start to really feel it in my lower back more quickly than usual. I'm switching up my back routine to try to stay ahead of that this coming season. 4 1 Quote

When I think about what you have to overcome and endure where you fish, I'm wondering if you might want to take a break and go wade the Everglades, where there are merely gators, pythons, and a trillion skeeters. 3 hours ago, gimruis said: Perhaps. No way! It's bad enough that there are gargantuan snapping turtles swimming around who occasionally surface way too close for comfort and seem fearless doing so. Their beaked heads can project a foot out of their shell with lightning speed. (Me making a sound like I just got the willies) Each time after one of these episodes I dream of designing a titanium cod piece. We have snappers twice the size of this gent. 1 1 Quote
Super User Swamp Girl Posted January 7, 2024 Author Super User Posted January 7, 2024 Maine also has those big snappers surface. I'll be fishing and one will rise right beside my canoe. The guy in that video is Crocodile Hunter fearless. I think I'll watch that video again! 1 Quote

Creek Pirate Posted January 7, 2024 Posted January 7, 2024 I kayak upstream in creeks a few times a week. This keeps my core strong and I have less back pain.Catch a few fish along the way. My aerobic excercises come from running from poisonous snakes while wading. I honestly lost 60 pounds on this work out regiment and have kept it off for 15 years. If any of yall would like to try my methods I would be happy to send you a box full of cotton mouths so you can get in shape too. 5 2 Quote

Super User Bankc Posted January 9, 2024 Super User Posted January 9, 2024 The easiest way to lose weight is to get one of those old, analog bathroom scales and turn the adjustment knob on bottom. I lost 25lbs in less than a minute doing that! It made the wife so happy she's considering lifting the chocolate embargo, which means I won't have to spend so much time in the garage this winter. 1 Quote
Zcoker Posted January 11, 2024 Posted January 11, 2024 Bass fishing is more a leisure sport for me. I get most of my heavy muscle workout on the ocean, on the beach catching and tagging sharks for NOAA. A full day or night of doing that is more than enough to keep me fit and in shape! There's no way I could do it out of shape, that's for sure. I also kayak the baits out 600 yards or more, all at night with big ground swells, jumping them in the dark, tearing those arms up! Then there's being strapped onto a 10ft unlimited shark rod with a big Penn Senator...some of these fish can pull over 1000 yards before they let out a hiccup. All in all, it's a brutal sport and even with a strong team of very fit guys, the fish can still put everyone into complete and utter exhaustion! 2 1 Quote

They simply don't have the time. They're floored. On top of that, they have a family to deal with. Patient load is overwhelming in most facilities. These nurses need to be totally focused on the details in order to keep things clinically sound. Some find the time to go to a gym but, for the most, it's a 24/7 way of life. 2 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted January 11, 2024 Global Moderator Posted January 11, 2024 I did have a regular workout routine and better diet but my new position at work has made it very difficult. I've been feeling it lately. My shoulders, hips, and elbows have really been hurting after each trip. With the Bassmaster Kayak Classic fast approaching, I've forced myself to get back in the gym and pay attention to what I'm eating again. I've been doing a lot of stationary biking to get ready for all the pedaling and working with stretch bands to get my shoulders and elbows feeling better. 2 Quote
