I sent my reel in to get serviced by a reputable guy. He just informed me that my metanium’s DC brakes are broken/shot. How could I have possibly done this? I’ve had this real for a year and a half and have taken really good care of it, so idk how this even happened. I spent $500 on this reel too so I would like to address and fix it.

Met DC does not have a conventional braking system where the individual brakes are either set on or off. It has a single digital brake control unit. So something doesn't sound right about your post?

This is exactly why I’m confused too. He just told me it’s shot.

Does the reel still make the distinctive DC breaking sound when you cast?

Before I sent it to him, I didn’t even notice it was broken. Makes the sound when I cast. I just wanted to get my reel annually serviced.

Was the brake system working when you shipped it our?

I thought it was. When I sent my reel my only implication was to get it serviced. I thought it was fine. When I get it back I’m going to look at it.

Something sounds fishy. No pun intended.

I would ask for some pictures and some more detailed info. I hope your guy didn't use a sonic cleaner or a solvent bath on your reel.

UPDATE: He figured out why the DC wasn’t working. He said the the dial was in between settings. So the reel is good.

I don't have experience with DC reels but I fail to understand why/how one would even come to this conclusion. Maybe I'm alone in this but when I service a reel, I don't test casting. I may make sure the spool spins freely but I don't go out and bomb casts. I don't understand how someone can determine the DC isn't working without fully fishing the reel. It's also my understanding the DC system itself is self-contained/closed so there's no need to even open it.

@BassBlowup354 Based on your post I would look for a new source to service your reels in the future.

This. And if he is reputable you may want to consider outing him because this sounds peculiar.

Everyone deserves the benefit of the doubt. It Could have been an honest mistake.  I’d hate get thrown under the bus if that’s the case.

How would one know DC brakes were bad if a reel just went in for cleaning?

I don’t know either. My point was just that the person involved should have the opportunity to answer the question to his customers satisfaction. I don’t know anyone that’s never made a mistake at work and would want the details published.

I'm with DVT on this one.  I'm an automotive technician, and a dang good one.  I still occasionally make a mistake, or give a customer bad information.  I correct these mistakes,  just like the person doing the service for the OP did.

I completely agree with the last two posts.
I don’t know anything about reel service or repair. But throwing it on a rod and giving a test cast after you get it back together. Doesn’t sound that terrible to me.

I’m not going to out this person because of this. I’m a little confused still myself about this situation because in reality I didn’t think the DC was broken, and I ended up being right. We’re human and make mistakes. The real test (no pun intended) is when I take it out on the water, and see how it fishes. That’s when I’ll know how the service is. He’s been very good with communication and such and I’ll give an update on how the reel performs after I get it back.

I haven't tried it on mine, but will DC brakes kick in and whine if you give the spool a good hard free spin?

Maybe they do and that's why he thought they weren't working.

I'm like others and prefer to give the benefit of the doubt.

Yeah, but this is the equivalent of taking your car in for an oil change and being told the turbo isn't spooling up properly.
