I planned to buy a new spinning rod for Ned rigs, weightless plastics, and some tubes.  I planned on buying the Tatula 701MFS, but I'm wondering if it would be up to handling the lighter baits.  Would I be better off with the 711MLFS or would it not have enough backbone?

I'm in the same boat and was considering both of these rods too. The 701MFS felt stout to me, for a MF that is. The MLFS will probably be fine as it's also somewhat crisp for a ML. I made my mind up to go with the 7'3" M XT instead. Had nothing to do with price.

The medium will be a bit heavy for ned rigs. The med-light on the other hand runs pretty light, perfect for ned rigs but a bit on the lighter side for weightless soft plastics. I'd probably steer you towards a St Croix ML to do everything you want to do on one rod, they sit somewhere inbetween.

I really like a ML for Ned rigs and drop shots.   I like a medium for shaky heads and stick baits.  I also carry a MH spinning rod fox stick baits in cover if needed.  I like the ML to help keep fish pinned.  It just seems to help me lose less fish with the softer rods.  I use a little heavier hooks for shaky heads and stick baits therefore the medium rods.

Thanks everyone for your opinion.  I ended up ordering both rods. :)

That's really the most ideal solution as long as your wallet can support it. They will complement each other nicely.

So which one is fitting your needs more often?

I probably use the 701MFS more, but always have both rigged and lying on the deck.

How do you find the medium rod for casting lighter weight Ned's?

How would you describe the power and action / general handling characteristics?

Thanks in advance, thinking of getting the 702 MF.

I generally use the 701MFS more, but really haven't used it for the super light baits so can't really give you a good answer.  The 711MLFS gets the Ned rig use.
