RipzLipz Posted December 28, 2023 Posted December 28, 2023 Lived here in IN my whole life. I do recall once when I was a kid my dad calling home one morning & telling my mom he was going fishing. 2 days later, still not back from fishing, he called and informed her he was in FL fishing. She wasn’t too pleased, thinking he was "going fishing" somewhere close to home. 2 2 Quote

Mine always wants me to do what makes me happy, and vice versa. If I ever thought I would have to walk on eggshells around my hobbies, things wouldn't have gone any further. This is a serious problem in western society these days. Men scared of domineering women. First, let me say that my wife is not a domineering woman (whatever that is?). She is an intelligent person with her own career, thoughts and opinions. My wife fished with her father when she was a kid. When she met me, I became her new fishing partner. If my wife ever told me to go fishing and she has numerous times, she did so because she knew it makes me happy. I took her fishing with me for the same reason. Marriage is a compromise that takes give and take on both sides. If one of the partners is scared or dominated, it's not going to last. For a marriage to last, it takes love, friendship and respect. If there is a problem with Western Society marriages, it's that one of them is missing. 6 Quote
river-rat Posted December 29, 2023 Posted December 29, 2023 My wife has never been upset about the amount of time I spend on fishing, whether it's in my tackle shop or on the water. I tell people all the time, I have a great wife -- she doesn't beat me, she doesn't write bad checks, and she smiles when I come home. What more could a man want? 4 Quote
Captain Phil Posted December 29, 2023 Posted December 29, 2023 Here's a tip for you young guys who are looking for a wife. If you want your wife to be happy with you fishing for the rest of your life, find a woman who likes fishing. Better yet, take her with you. 1 Quote

Super User N Florida Mike Posted December 29, 2023 Super User Posted December 29, 2023 My wife doesn’t fish anymore, but she doesn’t mind if I go. As long as my chores are mostly caught up. I don’t mind that, because part of being a man is fixing stuff, right.? A lot of it is just pride. If I had said no to her requests ( that were mostly just things I should be doing anyway, and weren’t unreasonable ), Id be singing the song” I’m gonna miss her”… 🤠 1 Quote

I don’t know @Captain Phil, this advice might work for some but not all. Mrs B and I have been happily married for over 35 years and she’s only only gone fishing with me twice early in our relationship. She’s been asked many times why she doesn’t go fishing with me. Her response has been “ that’s his thing, besides I’ve already landed a great catch so what else do I have to prove.” I believe in the adage “happy wife, happy life” because it’s been my personal experience if the Mrs is happy then she wants to see me happy. And if fishing makes me happy then she wants me out on the boat fishing. And if fishing involves traveling Mrs B is more than happy to go along for the adventure, just as long as she can stay in the resort or cabin. 5 Quote
Super User Log Catcher Posted December 30, 2023 Super User Posted December 30, 2023 There have been several times my wife came home to find a note from me telling her I had been called away on an emergency fishing trip. I always let her know where I would be fishing. Her only complaint might be she didn't get to go with me. Quote
Zcoker Posted December 30, 2023 Posted December 30, 2023 Be who you are, not who you’re expected to be. My wife started out with snook fishing, learning how to drop and position the hoop net off the jetty to land snook. Then she jumped into shark fishing, helping me land and tag sharks off our local beaches. Even down to the Keys, sleeping on the bridges and fishing for sharks. Or the Skyway Bridge on the west coast, hammering the bay. Or Boca Grande pass, grinding it out for big tarpon….I have her hand wherever we go. I have her blessing when I load up my yak to fish the everglades at night for bass. She makes sure I have enough drinks, clothing, and supplies. I have her concern, I have her reluctance, her fear, her hesitation, and, most of all, I have her complete understanding. She understands the drill. She understands how it’s going to be. She knows who I am and I know who she is. We’re in it together, happily! 5 1 Quote

She knows who I am and I know who she is. We’re in it together, happily! Fishing wives are great! Short story. Back around 1997, I came home and told my wife I wanted to sell our house and move to the Keys. I was paying big bucks to dock my boat in Miami and thought I could buy a place cheaper than the dock fee. To my surprise, my wife thought it was a great idea. We sold our South Florida home in two weeks before we found a place in the Keys. This upset my wife because she thought we would be without a home. That Sunday, we drove down to Key Largo. All the homes were out of our price range, so we were very disappointed. We drove over a small bridge and saw a For Sale sign in a condo window. I called the phone number and left a message with the Realtor. The next day we were at the office in Miami when the Realtor called. He said the owners were desperate and for us to make an offer. I offered him $135,000. He called me back an hour later to tell me the condo was ours. The condo was nearly new with a 45' boat dock a short distance from the Ocean. When you came out the canal, you were in the middle of John Pennekamp Park, one of the most popular diving spots in Florida. We commuted back and forth from Miami to the Keys for a number of years. I lost 30 pounds eating fish and walking up and down the condo stairs. We eventually grew tired of the commute and sold the condo for four times what we paid. That's the type of wife you want. 😊 4 Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted January 1, 2024 Global Moderator Posted January 1, 2024 @Captain Phil, I hooked a baby tarpon in pennekamp state park but it took me into the mangroves so I tried to horse it and broke off. They were renting canoe/kayaks by the hour but no one else was fishing. They sent a search boat after us at 5 hours hollering our names on a bullhorn 😂 , sorry sir we are just trying to fish here 2 Quote
Alex from GA Posted January 7, 2024 Posted January 7, 2024 I always ask my wife of 50+ years if I can go fishing and never has she said no. She used to go with me and read while I fish but the past few years she doesn't get along with the sun. We bought a place in FL so I could fish in the winter. 2 Quote

Fishin Dad Posted January 13, 2024 Posted January 13, 2024 I also have a great wife of 30+ years. She got a big promotion a few years ago and dumped $70,000 on a new boat she knew I wanted. She also allows me to fish anytime. Now, I have always been respectful and ask if she needs me for anything or do we have anything going on. She also likes that I don’t go out drinking and/or finding trouble. I was always there when the kids were little and we spent all our time as a family. I also encourage her to do things with her friends. She will fish with me when she feels like it and enjoys it. Beyond fishing, she is also an incredible person, mother, best friend!! I feel very blessed to have her in my life. And she knows that!!!! 4 Quote
