Super User DitchPanda Posted December 26, 2023 Super User Posted December 26, 2023 Most of my bourbon and rye consumption is either neat in a glencairn or over 1 big ice cube in a rocks glass. But lately I've really been enjoying cocktails...in particular old fashioneds, think I've finally got the recipe right for me. What is your favorite bourbon or rye cocktail? Quote
Super User Jigfishn10 Posted December 26, 2023 Super User Posted December 26, 2023 Bourbon or scotch, club soda and lemon twist. Summer drink for me. Quote

Super User FryDog62 Posted December 27, 2023 Super User Posted December 27, 2023 For years I drank/tested a number of Scotches and could really tell the differences and developed a top 10 list. I have been doing the same with various Bourbon and Ryes the past few years. If I’m honest, I can taste the differences, but it’s much more subtle to me and not as big a variance as Scotch. So instead of spending the extra coin - I just order a “Beamer” now and am just as happy. Jim Beam - on the rocks 1 Quote
Super User DitchPanda Posted December 27, 2023 Author Super User Posted December 27, 2023 Im liking some beam products lately...namely the single barrel and Knob creek 9. Quote

Super User DitchPanda Posted December 28, 2023 Author Super User Posted December 28, 2023 I recently picked up a bottle of OGD Bonded and I was underwhelmed after all the praise I've seen it receive. Which was surprising because I usually like Beam stuff like I said. Maybe it will grow on me. Quote

BigAngus752 Posted December 28, 2023 Posted December 28, 2023 We have way, way too much bourbon in our house. I had to order another cabinet to hold it. It has taken over fishing for "hobby dollars" in our house because both of us are enjoying it. Our best bourbons are imbibed "neat". We have a few higher-end bourbons that are a bit hot so they get one or two small ice cubes. Something that we buy and don't like will get mixed with Coke, but that's rare. The only other time bourbon is mixed is if my wife makes herself an old-fashioned or I make myself a whiskey sour. My whiskey sour recipe: -2oz Smokewagon bourbon ONLY (If I don't have Smokewagon, I don't have a whiskey sour) -1oz simple syrup -1oz real lemon juice -Maraschino cherry Quote

Also thanks for the reminder, I like a whiskey sour from time to time Quote
GReb Posted December 28, 2023 Posted December 28, 2023 Whiskey sour or old fashioned. I don’t add egg to the sour so it’s really a Boston sour I think. With the old fashioned I like to make my own brown sugar syrup and add a few dashes of bitters, two cherries and an orange peel. If I don’t have any oranges I’ll add a few dashes of orange bitters and they work quite well in a pinch. Quote

I'm mostly bourbon and rye with a couple scotches and a couple Irish...I'm guessing I'm at 35ish bottles myself. That's just for me...my lady isn't into whiskey. I don't question her book spending, she doesn't question my whiskey spending. Its a nice understanding we have come to. 1 Quote

Ok I figured so, my wife is obsessed with those things. She doesn’t even drink but somehow found a bulk jar of those cherries , I think it cost a small fortune Quote
Super User DitchPanda Posted December 29, 2023 Author Super User Posted December 29, 2023 Agreed the luxardos are incredible and the gold standard for a reason, however they are incredibly expensive. Honestly for home use though you can make an old fashioned even with a Luxardo or two in it for a fraction of what one will cost in a bar. If you are budget minded I've found that Wal mart carries a Best Value premium cocktail cherry...their store brand...they are nowhere near luxardo quality but are decent and also under $5 a jar as opposed to $20-$25.
