What lure/presentation are going to go with under these conditions?

Clear water, sunny, post frontal, 50 degree water temperature, no wind. Fishing from the shore, mostly rock/mud bottom, shallow to steep drop off some brush. My usual spot has been this way a lot lately and I am not sure what to fish. I've had some success in the past fishing small weightless plastics or ned rigs but want to try something different. There were numerous monsters swimming around in the shallows just before sunset tonight in 2-3' water.

What do you think they're eating...shad, threadfin/gizzard? crappie/bream? crawfish?

-1/2oz blade bait (damiki vault is my current fave)

-1/2oz football jig w/ beaver trailer

-1/4oz dht punisher jig w/ z craw (i like the hair and float for an almost deadstick)

- MB oneten jr (+1?)

- 3/8oz libero or other small underspin

I'd also swim/bottom bounce a 1/2-3/4oz DJ cali swim jig in crappie w/ a 120mm d walker in silverside if I think the bigguns are eating crappie in the brush pile or in that 2-3' range.  I also can't seem to put down a 1/3oz little cleo spoon w/ a single hook this winter in the colder water up here for the small shad eaters.  Only you can tell if that cover would eat these up or if you can present them properly.

I would try a KVD 100 jerk bait it has been good to me in that type of condition. A KVD 1.0 square bill can be good too IMHO.

Light line and BFS baits.

Spooked bass in cold water won't move. They just stare at baits. Putting something in front of them that looks like it was supposed to be there is a must..... Unless it's right at the crack of dawn. You have a short window when the fish will hit topwater.

Sounds like my places right now. I'm having luck with wacky rigged finesse worms or weightless and weedless stick baits in the shallows from the bank. I'm losing more hooks than ever right now with the wacky rigs but catching more than my family that comes along.

If you are seeing big fish during the last hour of daylight under the conditions you described, especially no wind, I would throw a gold/black back/orange belly floating jerkbait such as a Smithwick Rogue or Cordell Redfin.

Cast it out and let all the rings disappear. Then just barely twitch it and then let it sit. The fish will hit it while it's not moving. I have had good success this time of year doing this in the late evening.

Good luck.

Small 1/8 jig with a small trailer to keep the profile low, or a small bait on a split shot rig.
