Mossman Posted December 18, 2023 Posted December 18, 2023 I am trying to nail down my spinning real setups. Trying to do two rods to have and medium and a medium light setup. I have an Okuma Ceymar HD3000 that I picked up and plan to put that on a Medium Aird-x rod. I am thinking 15lb braid, but not set on that for sure. I also want to setup a medium-light but was wondering if another Ceymar HD 3000 would be too much, especially with a lighter line like a 10lb braid. Thinking the med-light for ned rigs and the medium for my Texas rigs. thoughts? Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted December 18, 2023 Super User Posted December 18, 2023 Lots of guys prefer 3000 size for all techniques...longer casts and less line twist with the larger reels is usually the stated reason. 5 Quote
Eric 26 Posted December 18, 2023 Posted December 18, 2023 @Mossman I have a 2000 size 13 fishing Creed on a 7’-1” Med Light with 8 pound braid and use it for Ned’s and couldn’t be happier. For me if I’m using a 3000 size it would probably be on a 7’-3”-7’-6” rod nothing shorter due to balance. YMMV😉 1 Quote
Super User webertime Posted December 18, 2023 Super User Posted December 18, 2023 I have a 35 sized Pfluger on my 7'6" ML spinning set up. It balances perfectly 1 Quote

Super User WRB Posted December 18, 2023 Super User Posted December 18, 2023 Most 2500 and 3000 size spinning reels use the same frame with deeper spool for the 3000, not a larger diameter spool. It’s more of the line capacity issue and bass fishing we only use the top 50 yards. Tom 4 Quote
djhands Posted December 18, 2023 Posted December 18, 2023 I have a Stella 4000 mhg on a nrx+ 872. I like the bigger drag for using 6lb fluorocarbon for smallies Quote
Super User bulldog1935 Posted December 18, 2023 Super User Posted December 18, 2023 rather than generalize, cut to the specifics - For fishing braid, would want the SA/SHA model to get the braid spool. https://www.okumafishing.com/en/product/Ceymar-HD-Spinning-Reel.html 2500 and 3000 are the same frame - small frame is 1000. The weight is the same, the capacity is the same, must be spool diameter that makes the difference between 2500 and 3000. Throwing in the silk thread scale PE braid chart https://www.jpfishingtacklenews.com/japanese-line-size/ I have a large-frame Shimano in especially good match with St. Croix Legend Glass MM. In lighter rods, I would go with medium frame. I save my small-frame Shimano for finesse, which includes light-in-hand ML rods. 2 Quote
Mossman Posted December 18, 2023 Author Posted December 18, 2023 That’s some interesting information! Based on that, I would be putting nearly 350 yds of 20lb braid on the reel! That’s a lot of wasted money. I did find one place that appears to sell the SA spool, but I wouldn’t say I am 100% confident that it’s a legit site. If I can’t source a shallow spool, what’s the best option, keep it only half filled or fill with cheap mono half way and put the braid over top? Quote

Never under fill a spinning reel - it'll severely affect your casting distance. Cheap mono backing is what I do with all my reels - not one is filled with main-line. Spinning reels, I use 4# Zebco Cajun - you can get a 3000yd spool on Amazon for under $9 https://www.amazon.com/Zebco-Monofilament-150-Yards-Virtually-Presentation/dp/B076MF6XRF?source=ps-sl-shoppingads-lpcontext&ref_=fplfs&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&th=1 Quote
Super User WRB Posted December 18, 2023 Super User Posted December 18, 2023 12-15# Big Game works good, put the mono and braid on as tight as reasonable. Fill backing to about 1/4” from the spool rim, braid to about 1/16” from the spool inside radius. Tom PS, no reason to change the mono filler, once and done. 1 Quote
PaulVE64 Posted December 18, 2023 Posted December 18, 2023 Electrical tape does a nice job of filling a reel and there's no chance of the braid digging into it Quote
GetFishorDieTryin Posted December 18, 2023 Posted December 18, 2023 2500 and 3ks are virtually the same size wise, a 3k is a couple mm wider according to a Daiwa rep when I inquired about swapping LT 2500 and 3k spools, so there is a difference there. IMO the biggest difference relative to the way it they fish is the length of the handle and the knob style. I like shorter handles for finesse baits Im moving with the reel and longer handles for baits I'm moving with the rod, shakey heads/t rigs, or high speed/power moving baits (which hare very few and far between for me.) As for line any decent 8 or 10lb braid has a breaking strength of closer to 12 and 15lb respectively which is more than enough as my highest drag pressure for FW bass rarely exceeds 4 lbs. Quote
LCG Posted December 19, 2023 Posted December 19, 2023 I reworked my Medium Light spinning set up at the beginning of last year. I paired a Tatula LT 2000 with a 6'8" ML-F fast spinning rod. I wanted the lightest set up I could get away with, without spending a fortune. It's worked out well so far. 10lb big game as backer with about 75 yds of 10lb braid. Quote
FrnkNsteen Posted December 19, 2023 Posted December 19, 2023 I like a larger reel on my rods, as MN Fisher mentioned, as long as they balance well. I just think the larger spools cast better, less affected by line memory, and in some instances have better drags. For instance, I believe the Stradic 3000 has carbon drag washers while the smaller sizes have felt washers I have 3000s on the majority of my rods. My wife prefers smaller reels, so hers typically have 2500s, and the smaller crappie rods currently have Fuego 1000s on them. My suggestion is put the 3000 you already have on the ML and see how it feels! 1 Quote

Super User MickD Posted December 19, 2023 Super User Posted December 19, 2023 Cheap mono never gets gummy/messy. I just don't see electrical tape having a place here. But to each his own. thanks for the reply. Quote

Tom PS, 10lb-.005D to 15 lb-.006D braid comes off a smaller diameter spool easier then a larger diameter spool. Size 1000 is ideal imo. 2 Quote
