Woody B Posted December 17, 2023 Posted December 17, 2023 Nice axes. I've been playing....or at least making noise since I was 8. I used to work part time in a studio mostly recording tracks for radio commercials. I also build acoustic guitars, although I've slowed down on that. This was the 25th guitar I built. It's all Koa....kinda my own body design. I wanted a 12 fret. I built a mold to fit an old L-00 style case. If my link to the recording works I'll post some more. I rented some studio time to record 3 guitars I had just built. Edit: I noticed the sound file quit working. I uploaded it to another free server here. All Koa 12 Fret 9 Quote

Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted December 18, 2023 Global Moderator Posted December 18, 2023 I’ve got an acoustic Alvarez copy of a Martin D35, it’s got the Brazilian rosewood 3 piece back. My aunt gave it to me, I was pretty shocked . It sounds wonderful especially when my fishing buddies play it (they are professionals haha) 8 Quote
JackstrawIII Posted December 18, 2023 Posted December 18, 2023 Been playing a long time. Used to play electric more, but the last 20 years or so have been almost exclusively acoustic. My prettiest guitar at the moment is this Taylor First Edition 524CE. 6 Quote
Super User J Francho Posted December 18, 2023 Super User Posted December 18, 2023 I occasionally play my wife's guitars. She has a Gibson Les Paul from the early 80s, an old Guild acoustic, and a newer Taylor acoustic with the preamps and piezo. I like playing the last one - the neck is so easy. My primary instrument is the drums. Been playing for over 40 years. 2 Quote
Super User Jar11591 Posted December 18, 2023 Super User Posted December 18, 2023 Used to play in my teens and early twenties. Sold my guitars and amps over a decade ago, and I regret it every day. Still hope to get back into someday. 2 Quote

Woody B Posted December 18, 2023 Posted December 18, 2023 As I stated earlier I've got a BUNCH of guitars. My workhorse for years was a 70's Tele with a B-bender. I've still got it, but never play it anymore. Amp wise I've got an old Fender Twin, as well as a Deluxe. I rarely touch an electric anymore. My "prize" acoustic is a 1955 Martin D18. My brother in law calls it "the organ". I've never played a guitar that "feels" like it does when played. I've also got a 1964 Gibson J-45. I bought it to have a decent acoustic made the same year I was. I'll have to dig through my files to find a picture. This recording is a Sitka Spruce/Black Walnut Slope Shoulder Dread I built for a guy in Canada. I love those big bodied short scale acoustics. Sitka-Black Walnut Slope D 1 Quote

Sitka-Black Walnut Slope D that guitar has a great bottom end, but still sounds well balanced. i guess that's the big body doing that? i know nothing about acoustic guitars, so if that's dumb, i can only ask for patience. hahahaa you have an old twin? man those amps are incredible. loud barely describes them, but nothing else sounds like they do. i had a red knob twin, years ago, that someone gave me as a thank you...sort of. at the time, i lived in an apt in toronto, so it was completely unusable to me, i sold it. where i live now (in the states again) i can get loud as i want. i would love to have an amp like that again. i would never use all the available gain, but it sounded so good i wouldn't care. Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted December 19, 2023 Global Moderator Posted December 19, 2023 @Woody B, do you have black diamond strings on your J 45? 1 Quote

You play Black Diamond strings cause it's all you can get." I played plenty of Black Diamonds when I was a kid. The local drug store had them. When I'd break one my Mom would take me there to get another one. Once a year, at Christmas I'd get a "whole set of strings" from the music store in "town". (Town was Shelby NC, 10 miles away) IIRC my yearly set of strings were Darco's. 1 Quote

Woody B Posted December 19, 2023 Posted December 19, 2023 I had forgot about that Ray Wylie Hubbard song. Guy Clarks "Black Diamond Strings" is what I was quoting. Music just flowed out of Tony Rice. I saw him play live once years ago at Merlefest. 1 Quote

thediscochef Posted December 21, 2023 Posted December 21, 2023 I am a bass player but I also have guitars. My favorite guitar is my dad's old highway one strat, blonde color. No mods. Gets run through an AC50. all of my basses are modded. My favorite bass is my P Bass. I installed lollipop tuners, a '63 Pure Vintage pickup, pickup cover, NOS pots, unfinished brass saddle bridge, and NOS cellulose acetate pick guard. It's my baby. I play it everywhere. The rickenbacker is a close second but it is my metal bass and kept in Drop C with .060-.120 stainless + hipshot bridge. Purple bass is a swamp ash jazz bass body with a roasted maple neck, an original bada** II and a lollar precision 90 pickup. It is my idea of the perfect bass, based on the Mark Hoppus signature but with the desire to fix a few things and add some premium items. Body is warmoth, neck is from Fender. Assembled, wired, and set up to professional specs by yours truly from top to bottom. Leaned against my Super Bassman and matching 410 Bassman Cabinet. Not pictured: Fender Starcaster Hollowbody bass, Fender Jazz Bass 1 Quote

Tim Kelly Posted December 21, 2023 Posted December 21, 2023 About a year ago I dragged my old fender acoustic out of the loft, where it had languished for about 40 years. Enjoying playing it, though I'm genuinely terrible at it, but it's fun. I got the set up a bit better after the academy of youtube showed me how, so it's a bit easier to play. No more 1/2" gap at the 12th fret. 😁 2 Quote
