Shimano spinning reels - Which are "power" reels/which are "finesse" reels ?

In watching some videos on Youtube they mention that some of the Shimano spinning reels are "power" reels and some of them are "finesse" reels (my guess is this means they are best used in "power fishing" applications or "finesse fishing" applications).

 

An example is:

--they say the Shimano NASCI reel is a "power" reel and the Shimano Miravel is a "finesse" reel. 

 

My questions are - 

--Is there a place online that people here know about that would list which reels are designed for "power" vs. "finesse" ? (Shimano or other companies)

--Is this is a real thing ? (ie, some reels are made more for "power" vs. "finesse")

--What techniques fall under "power" fishing ? 

--What techniques fall under "finesse" fishing ? 

 

As a newer to fishing person I am learning by the minute. If these topics are already covered in Bass Resources please just direct me there and I will read those posts/articles.

In my world, the rod determines what a rig is used for.

Whether it's 'power' or 'finesse' sounds cool on video but is virtually meaningless in the big picture. 

Lighter gear is finesse like and heavier gear is leaning toward the power fishing route. 

I will match the reel to the rod and the size & type of line I plan on using and I'm done. 

Every piece of fishing gear does not need to be 'classified' or designated to be effective.

Its a spinning reel. The shape of the spool lip and spool diameter are going to determine casting distance.

 

The Nasci and Miravel are basically the same, with the Miravel having a frame that is 1oz lighter. They both use the same parts and in fact the guts appear to be interchangeable. Miravel has a different drag (who knows if better). 

 

Tactical bassin runnin out of things to say and they have to hit that 10 min mark on videos. 

 

*Edit - after further thinking, the Daiwa BG is def a power reel if were defining power based on weight. That thing is heavy.

@garroyo130 I love my 1500 Daiwa B&G. I use mine for bluegill and crappie fishing but I’m definitely not worried if a bass jumps on with that reel😉

My 2 cents....I would consider a finesse reel as one that held less line so something with a shallow spool or a smaller frame reel like a 500-1000 size.

Different leagues, Vanquish is the all-time finesse reel by any maker (C2000S), and Twin Power is the bad-boy power reel (3000MHG).

Content creators be they you tubers or sponsored pros sometimes struggle to find something relevant to say and knowingly or unknowingly push the limits in their efforts. I like Tactical Bassin but that point is a bit of blah blah blah. AJ hit the nail on the head.

As a new angler, I wouldn’t get wrapped up in that aspect of a spinning reel.  Labeling a lure or reel as finesse is pretty subjective. Your questions are totally valid. Don’t stop asking 👍

i mean if one of them had a low gear ratio, that to me would be a power spinning reel

but the gear ratios are the same so...

 

now, if you are comparing sizes, like as mentioned above, a 1000 size reel is not going to work for pier salmon but a 4000 size reel does. so there's that

I use Shimano Solstace 2500, Sienna 1000 and IX 1000 when light and ultralight fishing in creeks. Bullet proof.

For power, frame, spindle and rotor stiffness matter, especially for useful life and long-term line management.

The life factor, which is Never off topic - I fished through my Penn 4400SS catching king mackerel off the S. Padre jetties in the '90s, and the result was reverse-cone line lay.  

 

For finesse, low drive inertia matters, so the reel doesn't keep winding itself.  

 

Shimano presentation did a good job dividing the two in their reel lines.

TB was referencing that the two reels that sit at the top of their line - the Stella  and Excense - determine how their line up works. To TB the Stella, and the reels that take tech from this line, are their “power” reels. The ones that are in the Excense line of tech are their finesse reels. Power or finesse, is probably subjective but I will say the reels I have fished of the two lines do I fact feels different.

Agree with some of the above but we've strayed from the OPs examples. A Nasci and Miravel are not specialty reels like the ones referenced. They have the same drivetrain. Maybe the Miravel comes with lighter lube?
