NittyGrittyBoy Posted December 12, 2023 Posted December 12, 2023 I normally fish around alot of current and timber, what hooks have yall found to keep hangups to a min when wacky rigging? I currently use #2 neko weedless vmc hooks, hookup ratio is nearly perfect, but snag up ratio is up there to. Just looking to try out different suggestions. Also to note, I do weedless wacky rig trickworms, which works excellent, I'm looking for suggestions on common 5" stickbaits 1 Quote
Peacedivision Posted December 12, 2023 Posted December 12, 2023 I really like the Owner sniper finesse neko weedless size 1 or 2 with a 6mm crossover ring. Almost identical to the VMC you're using just titanium weed guards instead of fluoro. For whatever reason the titanium guards snag a lot less for me compared to fluoro. Downside is the guards will eventually snap off. 2 Quote
NittyGrittyBoy Posted December 12, 2023 Author Posted December 12, 2023 I will definitely order a pack of em, thanks for the suggestions 1 Quote
Super User ChrisD46 Posted December 12, 2023 Super User Posted December 12, 2023 VMC Cross Over Rings for typical 5” Stick Worm #6 size (slightly snug fit) and # 1 size Decoy or Owner Mosquito Lite hook may help reduce hang ups (although VMC Neko #2 is an excellent choice ). Quote
NittyGrittyBoy Posted December 12, 2023 Author Posted December 12, 2023 I use the heat shrink method with great success, makes my GY sticks last forever! Just gotta work on getting snagged in timber. Thought about gluing heavy mono and making my own weed guards Quote
RHuff Posted December 12, 2023 Posted December 12, 2023 If I'm fishing around a lot of wood and hangups are an issue..... I texas rig a senko with a 1/32oz worm weight with a size 3/0 finesse EWG hook. I may or may not have gotten that idea from a John Cox BassU video 2 Quote
Super User FishTank Posted December 12, 2023 Super User Posted December 12, 2023 I use the Berkley Fusion 19 wacky jig head either 1/16th or 1/8th. They work great until the wires get twisted but overall I have been happy with them. https://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Berkley_Fusion19_Weighted_Wacky_Head_5pk/descpage-WTW.html 1 Quote
Super User gim Posted December 12, 2023 Super User Posted December 12, 2023 You could texas rig them instead of wacky rigging them. I know as soon as you stick a hook in that plastic, it obviously rips a lot easier. I've never found the weed guards to prevent getting hung up myself though. BTW I also exclusively use the VMC neko hook for wacky rigging too. Quote
RRocket Posted December 12, 2023 Posted December 12, 2023 I use what I consider to be the best wacky hook I've ever used. Bar none! As a bonus, it's also the finest drop shot hook I've ever used. You can get with or without weedguard. I've turned a couple members here onto this hook and they flat out love it. Some unique design features make it a standout winner. That little crook holds the bait beautifully. The hooks are extremely sticky! I know it's going to sound like BS, but I've never missed a hookset with these..it feels like they darn near hook themselves. So good is the hookset, that on multiple occasions the hook has passed in..and back through again. And for reasons I don't understand, most of the hooksets are dead center top of mouth. Not only is this a stupendous hook, but it's one of the best pieces of tackle I've tried in the last couple of years. If you're a wacky or drop shot enthusiast, you really owe to yourself to give this hook a try! Baits pictured are a 5" worm, and a 4.2" drop shot minnow. Hook size is 1. Hayabusa Spin Muscle hook. 4 Quote
Super User WRB Posted December 12, 2023 Super User Posted December 12, 2023 Owner #4109 Weedless Wacky Jungle hook size 1 for 5” Senko’s. Trim off the weed guard wire about 1/8” makes it a little stiffer for heavier cover. Tom 4 Quote
Fishingmickey Posted December 12, 2023 Posted December 12, 2023 Thank's for the heads up on the Hayabusa, RRocket! Quote

BassinCNY Posted December 13, 2023 Posted December 13, 2023 The bait monkey got me and I ordered a variety of Hyabusa hooks. I won't be trying them until May though. Quote
NittyGrittyBoy Posted December 13, 2023 Author Posted December 13, 2023 Ordered several of the hooks suggested here. 👌 I will report back how they do. 2 Quote
AJ Hauser Posted December 13, 2023 Posted December 13, 2023 Just to chime in - @RRocket is spot on - he actually shared some of the Hayabusa hooks with me and they are absolute killers for dropshot and wacky. I personally use 'em primarily for dropshot, and if you are ordering in the states they are really quite affordable. It looks odd and for me there was a period where I was doubtful... but after hooking aout 20 bass in the exact same spot, I started to really like these. They are not the only option, but they are really cool. Thumbs up! 15 hours ago, RRocket said: If you try it, please let me know how you like it. Super User bowhunter63 Posted December 13, 2023 Super User Posted December 13, 2023 Berkley weighted Wack Worm hooks 1/16 ounce , They work great in the river I just cut the wire weed guard off. They work great in the current Quote

And if I want a slower fall I will file down the heads making them lighter. Also, I dip the wire guards in crazy glue to keep them from unwinding. Like them much more than the VMC fluro guards. Quote
BassinCNY Posted December 16, 2023 Posted December 16, 2023 I got my shipment. Now I just have to wait for spring to try them out. Quote
papajoe222 Posted December 21, 2023 Posted December 21, 2023 Berkley offers a weedless wide gap in both weighted and unweighted versions. It has a light weed guard that works fairly well. I mainly used the weighted versions for a faster fall in deeper water. Not sure how they'd work in current, but they gotta be better than an exposed hook. 2 Quote
