Hawgin Posted November 28, 2006 Posted November 28, 2006 Has anyone had the opportunity to use one of the Powell Max 683C rods yet? This rod appears to have exactly what I have been looking for in a rod, but I have not heard much about their performance. IF anyone has used one let me know what you think. Quote
Super User senile1 Posted November 28, 2006 Super User Posted November 28, 2006 Hawgin, I own a 683c, medium-heavy action with a fast tip. I love it. I have it paired with a Shimano Citica 200d. At the moment, it's my most sensitive rod and I think it compares well with more expensive rods. I've included a quote I made in a previous post regarding this rod. Read the test on Tackletour.com. Check out Powell rods (www.powellco.com). The Powell Max 683c lists for $169, which is a dollar less than a St. Croix Avid, and it is 6' 8" long. I own both rods. I love my Avid, but in all honesty, the Powell smokes the Avid in sensitivity. It has a split grip. It's just my opinion but I think this rod can compete with rods in the $250 - $300 range. Read this review at Tackletour.com for more objective information: http://tackletour.com/reviewpowell683cxfast.html. The only problem with Powell is you won't be able to find them everywhere. I had mine shipped from a store in Wichita, KS. The rod has a lifetime warranty. If you're interested the following link is a list of retailers who sell these rods: http://www.powellco.com/bassrods_retailers.htm. Quote
Super User Gatorbassman Posted November 28, 2006 Super User Posted November 28, 2006 One of our members (Triton Mike) used to be sponsored by Powell Rods and is still good friends with the man that designed the Max series. He would be a good contact for a honest opinion on them. Just send him a PM. Quote
nightbasser Posted November 28, 2006 Posted November 28, 2006 I have one. It is a very good rod, and fit's the all-purpose category better than most other rods I have used. Very sensative and pretty light. It's a very hard rod to beat at that price point, I highly doubt you would be disappointed if you bought one. Quote
Guest avid Posted November 29, 2006 Posted November 29, 2006 I think Powell rods are catching on quickly. They are inexpensive because they are made in China but they are not 'cheap'. I think they may be the next hot rod in the marketplace. Quote
