Pat Brown Posted December 5, 2023 Posted December 5, 2023 I love fishing a chatterbait and have never caught a fish in the cold on one. This year I only caught 3 fish on it mainly focusing on other techniques during warmer months. I think this winter, I may have to change this to 'i have caught a fish out of cold water on a chatterbait' 😎🎣 Thanks Glenn! 1 Quote
RipzLipz Posted December 5, 2023 Posted December 5, 2023 Good info. @Pat Brown I have a feeling we will be seeing another pic of you & a toad should you keep at it with the chatterbait. "Winter" - single layer of clothing, sunshine, lilly pads & green grass in the background is not wintertime around here, that’s for sure. 🤣 1 2 Quote

We have over a foot of sunshine today! 1 6 1 Quote
RipzLipz Posted December 5, 2023 Posted December 5, 2023 @928JLH I can’t complain for here, low 40s & will be fishing from a boat in December in IN for the first time in my life. Catching quality will more than likely be the real challenge. 3 Quote

With water in the low 60s high 50s. Hoping for some cold snaps to really get them munching. The grass is still very green and healthy everywhere. 2 Quote
RipzLipz Posted December 5, 2023 Posted December 5, 2023 @928JLH Aquatic vegetation is or in process of dying off in the public lake I have been fishing the most. Forecasts through the middle of the month look pretty consistent temperature-wise (highs above 39°, pick your low). Rain & wind are the dealbreakers for me (light 2 person boat, not getting sick for a bass). If you get sick of warm weather, a cold, damp seat is often available when my dad wusses out. 😉 If @Pat Brown keeps catching soo-piggies, he might get an unannounced Xmas guest! 🤣 2 Quote

Sounds wonderful. Btw, how many feet of that sunshine does it take to replenish the lakes, rivers & reservoirs in AZ ? A-Jay 4 Quote
RipzLipz Posted December 5, 2023 Posted December 5, 2023 Don’t worry @A-Jay he’ll have 100 feet of sunshine by June & replenish it with sweat. 5 Quote
txchaser Posted December 6, 2023 Posted December 6, 2023 Dead of winter fishing a chatterbait like a biffle (right off the bottom) made a really epic day for me one winter. It was cold and nasty out. Blade bait might have done the same thing. 3 Quote
txchaser Posted December 6, 2023 Posted December 6, 2023 Fishing a red one in the winter instead of waiting for early prespawn... interesting. I'm fishing more and more red-ish colors all year round and getting some good results. I'm definitely trying red this winter. Quote
The Bassman Posted December 6, 2023 Posted December 6, 2023 I've had good success with bladed jigs during the winter. Have been using other presentations (blade baits, ned, suspending jerks) more lately. My experience seems to confirm that the most effective technique is the one that I am focusing on currently. I do best when I know what I want to use from the start. Changing baits all day just because I'm not getting bit quick enough fosters frustration and pretty much guarantees a less than stellar outing. 2 Quote
Susky River Rat Posted December 6, 2023 Posted December 6, 2023 Winter time here means drowning a jig for 15-30 seconds before you move. I swear each cast takes 15 minutes per cast. Booo for sub 40s temps. 1 Quote
