Decided to throw the spin n’ pig today.  Caught 3 in short order.  Some notes:

  • Strikes were violent.  Bang!
  • Had several swipes as I reeled in (drawing power)
  • I like lures with constant feedback. The beating of the blade is similar to a chatterbait.
  • It’s snagless

I've never seen that bait before. Is it still made?

Never seen a Snagless Sally?

Yes they are still made & still deadly!

@Catt wow, definitely have never heard of that. Learn something new every day, but the bait monkey remains alive and well!

I always had issues with the weed guard. I'd end up either trimming them, or removing them.  I have a love affair with in-line spinners of all sizes. I've caught everything from bluegill to muskie on them. There was a company, back in the day, that made a similar bait that sported a turtle back blade. 1/21oz. bait. That thing caught me more pike and big walleye than any bait since.

The guards are stiff, but the bass hit so hard that it didn’t pose a problem.  I’m a fan as well and I keep hearing they catch everything. Bowfin is on my list.

It never crossed my mind to position a weed guard at a 90° angle to work the bottom. Has anyone tried this?

Better buy a half dozen, Choupique (Bowfin) will absolutely destroy any lure. We try hard not to catch em.

The new Snagless Sally's have better skirts & hooks.

I hooked into one of the biggest bass of my life on a Snagless Sally. She was so big that she broke the 30lb mainline that I was using. Unbelievable hit. I saw it as plain as day. A big dark blob following the lure and then this giant white mouth opening up to engulf the lure, as if the whole area turned pure white--BOOM! The yanks from that fish were so hard that the Jon boat that I was using started moving--not kidding! Out of all the fish that I've ever caught in all my years, I'll never forget the hit from the Snagless Sally!

The Hildebrandt Snagless Sally was one of the first subsurface spinners that could be comfortably thrown in weeds.  Previous to it, most bass fishermen threw Johnson spoons or buzzbait's like those made by Al Foss in cover.   Like all Hildebrandt lures, the spinner blades are very high quality.  Back in the day, few people fished Bass offshore.  There were no electronics to help you, so shoreline weeds were where we fished.  The first people who wrote about offshore bass fishing were Jason Lucas and Buck Perry.  Kevin VanDam was once quoted as saying there are always some bass shallow.  This holds true today as it was back then.

I haven't thrown a Snagless Sally in some time.   In my boat flipping and pitching have replaced it.

The snagless sally is still made as noted above but the OP’s UJ #101 Spin Frog isn’t made anymore to the best of my knowledge.

My in-laws from MN trolled snagless sally with a night crawler  or minnow for walleyes and pike, very popular up north.

You must be from the south.  I’m from Louisiana so Choupique is my preferred term.
I hate to hear that you avoid them.
Choupique put up a stronger fight than bass. Their reputation is grimy but unwarranted imo. And they get proper big.

Southwest Louisiana 😉

Oh Choupique's put up a great fight, ruin your lures, they're slimy, ain't good to eat, fool you into thinking they are bass.

Besides I ain't Choupique fishing I'm bass fishing.

I could fill up my house on the number of largemouths I have caught on a Snagless Sally with an Uncle Josh pork frog trailer. I have used it since I was a teenager and have never stopped.

It is extremely productive in the Atchafalaya Basin and the marshes of south Louisiana all the way down to Venice, LA.

I might have to give the SS a shot. I see Picasso makes their version of the SS up to 3/4oz as well as one that has no skirt but instead a swimbait jig head with weedguard. Split ring connects spinner wire to eye of jig head so jig head can be swapped & topped off with plastic of choice.

*SIGH*

Bait monkey sure is a vile & relentless a**hole this week.

If it makes you feel any better, the heavy skirted version of this, fished just above the bottom, caught me some big fish this year. Haven't spent much time with the unskirted version yet, but I bought them and I'm pretty sure it's going to be good. I bought them to fish in some spots where the pondweed grows heavy and a chatterbait is a no-go.

AFAIK, the Arbogast Hawaiian Wiggler came before the Snagless Sally, and I believe Arbogast helped Hildebrandt with designing the Sally. I read something to that effect anyway somewhere along the way.

The HW was my #1 bass catcher when I was a kid. Couldn't put it down. Just like you I found the feedback addictive. Once I figured out that I could run it through Lily pad fields without losing it, I went on a crazy bass catching run. I barely lost any either using only 6lb Stren. I was crestfallen when my local tackle shop said they'd no longer stock them due to state lead regulations in early 1980, so I bought what they had left in stock which wasn't much. They still work great these days.
