Rods for round reels

Do you build rods differently for round reels?

I use an ECSM reel seat that seems to fit round reels better for my hand. I use Ambassadeur 4600s and smaller older Promax and Blackmax 1600s.

I prefer all my casting rods to have a short 2” fore grip to accommodate holding the rod with 2 finger on the fore grip and resting round reels against my palm.

I use a fully exposed bottom Castaway reel seat for the same reason mentioned by crypt. The bent reel seats on the old rods were made to mitigate their design, and to straighten the line path to the guides, there was even one that had a hole in front and the guides ran on the bottom of the rod for a straight path. This is a picture of the Castaway reel seats on Swampland Tackle rods.

I will cut the reel seat back where its just about flush with the hood.
No foregrip.

I will also grid down the triggers.

For all reels, or just round reels?

Thanks everyone. I have an RX6 extra heavy coming. Trying to decide on a reel to put on it.

I wouldn’t say I build them any differently. There are always details and fine tuning considerations for a technique specific build.

The obvious thing is the reel sits higher on the seat and this requires the 1st guide needs to be a little further forward and higher frame as does the 2nd guide after that no difference needed.

@WRB This is exactly what I was thinking, and would probably go that route. You answered me on my other thread about the Bantam. We are talking about the same combo. I took to heart your comment about line capacity. I believe it will either be that Ambassadeur C4 or that Scorpion MD300.

Shimano Cardiff 300 is good choice vs the CA imo.

Not that long ago you could buy/build a rod with a Wiebe/Super Sticker grip that also helped with round reels as the hole running through the back of the reel seat was offset to raise the grip on top to help palming and pulling your hand closer to the reel on the bottom for the same reason. All the high end G Loomis rods used them and the Black Widow Edge Rods. Others used them off and on, they are now and always were U.S. made seats.
