Puggz Posted November 30, 2023 Posted November 30, 2023 Of course all my baitcasters have a double handle but what about spinning? I'm in the market for a new 3000 series reel and wonder if I should consider a double handle. Reel is to go on a P5 Windbuster if that matters..lol TIA< 1 Quote
thunderblack Posted November 30, 2023 Posted November 30, 2023 Use to fish with a Shimano double handle spinning reels. I liked it but don't see the benefit. Been fishing with single for years and don't miss it. Quote
Super User Solution bulldog1935 Posted November 30, 2023 Super User Solution Posted November 30, 2023 Double and counter-balanced handles make a difference for finesse feel. Gravity acting on the weight of the rotor and bail in certain positions tries to keep turning your crank. Counterbalance offsets this, and gives you more subtle feel, e.g. big fish sipping tiny winter bait. Note it's important to match handle length (pitch) with gear ratio. Too long handle on a low-geared reel won't let you keep up with charging fish. 2 Quote
Eric 26 Posted December 2, 2023 Posted December 2, 2023 (edited) I’m going to add my .02 cents on this one. As some of you may know I received as a gift a reel from my friend @bulldog1935 a Tica Cetus 500 spinning reel. What many if anyone may not know is that he sent me a personal reel that he took the time and thought to upgrade the handle and corresponding non handle side to a double paddle handle and a non handle “reel stand/hook keeper” included instead of taking back his upgrades and using at his discretion. I immediately placed the reel on a 6’-6” St Croix light powered rod to throw 1/16 oz inline spinner’s and I have to say the upgrades made a difference in my cadence when reeling in said spinner and also as far as the balance as he has pointed out when I wanted to “pause my retrieve” it stopped immediately. Before this turns into a novel I will say before I continue seeking out the “perfect” reel I will consider upgrading my “personal” current collection as I feel looking into upgrading parts that I personally was overlooking I:E spools, handles etc. would be worthwhile. YMMV😉 Edited December 2, 2023 by Eric 26 I screwed up😉 2 1 Quote
Bigassbass Posted December 2, 2023 Posted December 2, 2023 I bought 2 Ticas and upgraded the handles, not much of a reel if you don't fix the handle and honestly you can buy most any brand reel with nice handle for what you'd pay to upgrade a Tica. Those reels are just ok, nothing to get excited about. Quote

Super User bulldog1935 Posted December 2, 2023 Super User Posted December 2, 2023 I'll say something about Tica. Try fishing your micro-frame reel 7 hard years in salt finesse, then see if there's enough of it left to give to a friend. It came with karma, including doubles with snook and redfish. 3 Quote
FrnkNsteen Posted December 2, 2023 Posted December 2, 2023 I need to start looking at that aftermarket stuff! Though maybe I don't!! .... Seems like an ENTIRELY different rabbit hole that could empty my wallet quickly!! 😜😜 2 Quote
Super User bulldog1935 Posted December 2, 2023 Super User Posted December 2, 2023 @FrnkNsteen Sorry, I just gave away a Livre handle to my bud Tony when I lined his new Stradic last week. (Tony brought me a 6'er of Green Flash West Coast IPA) Also had one of these waiting for Tony, no words for how functional this Tsubaki hook and line keeper - rotating hook keeper, o-ring stack grabs line My small-frame Shimanos in salt finesse also have the MTCW mods, including dual-BB titanium line roller and all-metal drag cap with internal spring and amazing fine-adjusting drag range. Also lets you add finger drag. I had enough of this stuff stashed away, I traded my original Shimano handles and a few Livre knobs for a '77 Ambassadeur 4500C that was on my want list for BFS tinkering. kinda funny, swapping pm's with my friend and admin on FFR today about being "hosed" on a custom rod. I'll plead niche-specific function to go with my hose-down. 1 Quote
ElGuapo928 Posted December 2, 2023 Posted December 2, 2023 I had a Spirex and never really liked the handle. On the other hand, I’ve got a buddy who swears by them, and usually has no less than 4 of them on the deck. Quote
