Puggz Posted November 30, 2023 Posted November 30, 2023 In the market for a new quality spinning reel and I'm looking for information on how to decode the all the different codes that make up the model number. I totally understand the sizes as this is the same in NA but using this as an example, what is the real difference and does it matter to me? This goes for both Shimano/Daiwa - some things are intuitive (DH for double handle) but others not so much. Shimano 23 Vanquish C2500S:Hand Retrieve: Right or Left-Handed Weight: 150g Gear Ratio: 5.1:1 Max Drag: 3kg Line Retrieve/Crank: 70cm Ball/Roller Bearings: 11/1 Mono Line Capacity(lb-m): 5-110, 6-95, 8-70 Shimano 23 Vanquish 2500SHand Retrieve: Right or Left-Handed Weight: 165g Gear Ratio: 5.1:1 Max Drag: 4kg Line Retrieve/Crank: 75cm Ball/Roller Bearings: 11/1 Mono Line Capacity(lb-m): 5-110, 6-95, 8-70 Quote
Peacedivision Posted November 30, 2023 Posted November 30, 2023 Only difference between the 2 models you listed is the frame size. C (compact) Shimano models use the larger spool on a 1 size downsized frame. First letter after the spool size denotes depth M, MS, S, SS from deepest to shallowest (no letter would be the deepest spool option). PG, HG, XG denotes gear ratios. DH = dual handle as you noted. 1 Quote

Thank you, makes sense. So to confirm, a Compact frame uses the same spool as the non Compact reel. Is the Compact version just to save a few grams? TIA. With the dual handle, I noticed that the spool capacity is much smaller than the other models.. Quote

Yeah the dual handle Vanquish are both shallow spool finesse models. The larger 3000 spool also allows for a bigger/smoother drag stack. Quote
Loomis13 Posted December 1, 2023 Posted December 1, 2023 Agree with the poster above. On a different note, I just got the Vanquish C2500S in yesterday and used it today for the first time. And wow. Just an incredible reel. This is coming from my experience with 3 different Stradic Ci4 generations. Definitely a noticeable difference. Quote
Solution newapti5 Posted December 1, 2023 Solution Posted December 1, 2023 "C" compact is not just about the spool size; the reel body as well. For example, C3000 will have the same size body and same diameter spool as a regular 2500; C2500 will have the body and spool size of a regular 2000... The difference between a C3000 and a regular 2500 is C3000's spool is deeper for more line capacity. Compare the reel weights and you'll see. So say you want a larger diameter spool of fluoro, a 3000 or bigger size reel will be better, since a C3000's spool diameter will be the same as a 2500's. Quote

With the dual handle, I noticed that the spool capacity is much smaller than the other models.. Close, but not exactly true. The spool diameters will be the same (spool capacity dictated by spool depth), ...But... the reel pitch will match the frame - small frame, medium frame, large frame. C2500 will interchange spool with small frame reels - same pitch. 2500 will interchange spool with medium frame reels, etc. C3000 is med-frame with large frame dia Quote
