I've been a member of BR for six years now. And I love it. One of the best things about BR is the learning experience here.        When I joined, I'd already been bass fishing for twenty five years or more. In the six years I've been a member here, I've learned all sorts of things, and my fishing has improved as a result.                What I've realized is that no matter how long you fish, you can always learn things. I appreciate all the helpful tips, advice, and discussion I've had here on BR. There's some really good sticks on this site, and, it pays to listen to what they have to say.         How about you guys? What are some things you've learned since you joined BR.

I'm in the same boat.  I grew up fishing a certain way.  I've gotten engrained with fishing certain baits in certain situations.  What I've learned is that there's more than one way to skin a cat.

I've also learned (with BR help) when to call it for a given method, place, or day.  Sure, there are some days where I just want to cast and crank and not care if the fish are up for it.  But when I want to catch fish I've learned (better, not complete) when to call it and do somehting different.

The biggest thing for me is that I’ve learned that it is possible to make friends without actually meeting them and reaffirming that there really are kind people in this world.

Other the obvious (at least for me)

Learning about different baits that peaked my interest…

Validation that I bought quality equipment..

Etc

There are many things that I didn’t realize as much before signing on….

*The distaine by so many of fluorocarbon and the misinformation about it…

*The misinformation of tournament fishing…

*The amount of folks who use leaders…

*The amount of folks who use spinning gear…

*The pros and cons of Kyack fishing…

*The passion that some have of certain brands…

There are more but you get the gist.

Greetings All,

BassResource is a wonderful repository for information (knowledge, opinions). There are ample examples of those categories. The support for the angling community is helpful for individuals at all levels for the different angling ambitions (recreational, competitive). Personally it is nice to review and harvest information casually when time and motivation permit. It is also beneficial to be able to contribute to the body of knowledge on those occasions where it is appropriate.

@Mike L provided a good characterization of many topics recently addressed in the BR forums. These exchanges improve situational awareness and provide consideration for our approach to angling adventures.

My recreational angling endeavors are considered basic in nature, usually soft plastics weedless or on a jig. This does not preclude learning about new options and techniques that may result in eventual adaptation. An example: recently I collected an abandoned lure. It happened to be one of the more popular top water hard baits. It presented an opportunity for me to try and through some research on BR I was comfortable in my successful approach to using it.

Similarly, I get to read about topics such as angling on a kayak, which I do frequently. It is very helpful to be able to see how others approach this.

It is all about the information exchange. Glen, and members, have created an environment where information exchange is facilitated and managed well. Personally, I frequent the site as time permits just to see what is going on and to do what I can to keep up with the Cool Kids <grin>. Wishing all a wonderful Holiday Season, Best Fishing and Be Well!  Cheers!

I like seeing photos of impressive fish whether they are bass or not.  Dinks, not so much.  I have trouble grasping the idea of showing off small fish lol.  I also like the "show your ride" thread but that one doesn't get updated nearly as often.  One thing I've learned recently is that there are a lot of people out there that have almost no restraint or will power when it comes to buying tackle.  Money and items on sale seem to just burn a hole in their pocket.

Plus I need to stay on the hair and attire here because I'm the Haircut and Fashion Police.  Keep it clean, folks. :naughty: :cut:

Been a member for about decade now. I remember the first thing I learned here. It was that there are many others like me who absolutely obsess over bass fishing. BR was the first exposure I ever had to other obsessive fishermen, and I immediately felt a sense of camaraderie.

As for what else I’ve learned here over the last 10 years, it’s hard to think of one singular thing. I owe the majority of my bass fishing knowledge to other members here. So many times on the water I’ll think to myself “where did I learn this technique?” or “how did pick up on this habit?”, or “what made me pick this spot to fish?”. And the answer can usually be traced back to bass resource. I’ve always been what I think is a naturally inclined fisherman, but BR is what made my bass fishing skill grow exponentially.

Found this site via @Low_Budget_Hooker YT videos 15 years ago.

Joined to learn then and it's never stopped.

Couldn't possibly list it all but I can feel good about submitting three major deals.

1. Safety on the water is always paramount and people perish in nice weather too.

2. Fishing Hard always pays off, eventually.

3. Putting an average basshead on an above average body of water,

 can produce surprising results.

Yep, fluorocarbon sucks …and everybody has a different ‘favorite’ knot that has never failed them. Those are the two biggest for me 😆

On a more serious note, I’ve identified a few forum participants over the years who seemed particularly knowledgeable in certain areas or techniques, and whom I took the time to research and copy every post they ever made on a subject, and edit it down to a single searchable document of knowledge 😎

This sounds like a great idea. I nominate you for being the top man on the history of our sport, as well as other topics also. Good stuff.

Hard to summarize what I've learned here but some nuggets:

Don't worry about what the bass are doing, worry about what they eat and what it's doing. 😉

Depth and Speed are about the only two major considerations when it comes to presentation and lots of baits will work when fish are active.  Bait selection is more about efficiency and what cover you're fishing.

Size/profile matter a lot more than sound or color or action on a bait.

Rate of fall is a critical thing to be concerned with when vertically presenting baits in and around cover.

Bass seasons have almost nothing to do with our calendar or even the temperature.  Lot more to do with the suns angle in the sky and how much daylight is happening per day.

Bass don't slow down much at all in cold water.  It's their food that slows down.

Things I've learned here in the last 4.5yrs

1) There are many here who are highly knowledgeable

2) Opinions on the best lures/plastics/line vary widely

3) The bait monkey is insidious and relentless.

I’ve learned I have an incurable disease called fishing & it’s very contagious & has infected every single member here. I would never wish for a cure for myself or anyone else. Stay sick, my angling friends.

slow clap GIF

If I don’t know something in regards to angling, I can probably find the answer or get headed in the right direction at this site alone.

Some members are very accomplished anglers. Some of you are very accomplished writers. Some of you are terrible spellers & should heed what spellcheck suggests. Sorry, it’s a thing with me & I say that very jokingly (sort of).

There are actually some decent people left in this world. Whether or not they can actually drive a vehicle with any amount of common sense remains to be determined. If you’ve ever been driving on I-65 south of Indy & someone gave you the finger outside of their truck window, that was probably me & I am sorry (but you more than likely earned said finger).

There’s no amount of thanks I could give to those who have been kind enough to pass on their knowledge and/or experiences to myself and others.

Many have differing opinions but I’m still surprised how many feel one is right or one is wrong.

I don’t need more tackle & probably have an issue which requires professional help.

Thank you all for your time & efforts & for making my recent time as a poster rather than lurker enjoyable. I hope I can positively contribute as much as this place has to me, not just in fishing.

I've learned much more than I could list. A few that helped me the most.

- Move until you find feeding fish.

- I'm better off fishing a few baits in alot of areas versus fishing alot of baits in a few areas.

Gosh, it'll be hard to list it all, but here are some of the big things I've learned:

You can chuck various lures into thick cover and catch bass, not weeds. I know that seems obvious to most of you, but I learned it here.

I bought my handy, yellow bump board because of BR.

I learned about Whopper Ploppers, underspins, Keitechs, wakebaits, and much more. Together, they've put hundreds of bass in my boat.

I've also learned about lures like chatterbaits and Ned rigs, which I've used inconsistently, but hope to spend more time fishing in 2024.

I've learned that the misconceptions that many women might have about men not welcoming them to a fishing community are wrong, wrong, and wrong.

I've learned that Tim(@RipzLipz) is the funniest poster.

1st joined this site as Oldschool and somehow lost that name and rejoined as WRB, both describe who I am, old and hopeful.

Gary Dobyns recommended the Bass Resource site to me even though he wasn’t a sponsor. The reason Gary recommended BR was Glenn May runs a good site with controversy BS allowed. I learned from other site that there is some jealousy and jerks laying in weeds.

Thanks to Glenn we don’t have viscous replies, lesson learned.

Probably forgot more than I learned, getting old isn’t fun.

I knew nothing about kayaks and wish I could have fished from them.

I learned about BFS discovering my preference for light tackle was early BFS and didn’t know that.

I learned using braid helps manage line twist on spinning reels.

I learned from experience that FC line has both good and unreliable performance and still use it for it’s good qualities.

I learned from this site that Tatsu FC is a good reliable FC line.

The BR site has a good group of members that we can call friends without meeting them face to face and it’s made my life more enjoyable.

Tom

I learned that I should not be "leaving fish to find fish."  That has backfired so many times in the past, both read on this forum and through trial and error.  Its just a bad move, soldier, and it rarely works out.

I’d love to see that!

It probably would eliminate the search function! 😀😀

I've been slowly working on this same thing, but putting them in E-Pub so I can reference them on the water with my phone or tablet.

I have been here a year. As others have said there is a great crew here full of knowledge. I joined here to read during the winter months. Research things good and bad. I “dabbled” in bass fishing a year ago. Now I am very heavy into it.

i have learned I fish different than most. Some days for better some days for worse.

i learned more about pros and tournament fishing than I ever thought I’d be interested in.

I think I am one of the few maybe the only member here that has a jet drive.

I learned JDM is a thing.

I learned to have fun fishing. As dumb as that might sound.

I learned I would love to keep being a part of this great group. I’ll also have people to share my fishing experiences with.

@ol'crickety at least I taught someone something! Ironically I figured everyone knew about them because I’m so used to it.

i also learned the susky is a place people want to travel to. I’ve been spoiled with it my whole life.
