detroit1 Posted November 29, 2023 Posted November 29, 2023 I have watched a few episodes of this show on the World Fishing Network and have some questions if anyone can answer. It involves different groups of guys dragging nets to catch carp, buffalo, and suckers as their job. They do this on lakes around western Wisconsin / Minnesota. My first question is who are buying these fish? Culvers? Mc Donalds? Burger King? haha. My real guess is fertilizer. Anyone know? 1 Quote

RipzLipz Posted November 29, 2023 Posted November 29, 2023 @detroit1 Likely exported to Asian markets. From what I gather, buffalo were once popular to eat in the US 150-200 years ago. Dining preferences changed & more Americans get turned off by bones in fish. As we make mistakes (importation of European carp, now called common carp, as well as the Asian carp fiasco in the 80s), we’ve also learned some of these bottom feeders (not to be confused with my ex-wife) are causing issues like disturbing native aquatic vegetation & stirring up sediment which leads to unwanted algae blooms in some areas. https://sdleastwanted.sd.gov/docs/conservationdigest/CommercialFishing.pdf 1 Quote

Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted November 29, 2023 Global Moderator Posted November 29, 2023 They commercially net buffalo carp and cats from chickamauga and nickajack, quite controversial but there’s a market for the meat Quote
Super User Tennessee Boy Posted November 29, 2023 Super User Posted November 29, 2023 Check out this video about a processing plant in Kentucky that buys mostly Asian carp from local fishermen. They also buy Buffalo, catfish, and common carp. You can go to their website and buy two fish heads for just $12. Yum🤣 Quote
Super User gim Posted November 29, 2023 Super User Posted November 29, 2023 When I was in the grocery store over the summer one time, I saw Buffalo Filets in the seafood area. Had to do a double take on that one. 1 Quote
