We all have this desire and the thought process is same for all of us, what should I use and where should I start?

It doesn’t matter how long we have been fishing the decision remains and the answers are always the same, we try to answer it as we decide what to use and where.

I actually love the challenge of second guessing what bass want tomorrow morning.

Selecting my rod and reel combo, checking the line, sorting out lures a the while pondering I am guessing right?

The fact I have been bass fishing over 70 years and only had 2 lures and 1 rod reel combo in the beginning the question hasn’t changed but success hangs on the answer.

I ponder and overthink most things fishing.   However, I truly believe the stuff most of us (including myself) ponder the most is the least important.   It doesn't matter which rod, reel, line I pick up, or what lure I have tied to it if I don't put it in front of a Bass.   Still, I'll ponder all of this equipment stuff without even thinking about where I'm going to make my first cast.  (I shouldn't admit some of this)  Most of the times when I'm launching my boat I haven't even decided if I'm going up river, or down river.   My "top secret" method for that decision is "odd/even"  with the time.   After unloading my boat and parking my truck....the instant my butt hits the seat at the console in my boat I'll look at the clock on my sonar screen.  If the time is odd I'll go up river, if it's even I'll go down river.   I'll use similar scientific methods to decide "main lake or creek channels" ect.

If anyone wants to go fishing with me, we "might" catch some fish, but I'll guarantee you my thought process will keep you entertained.

Guilty, but I normally have three of the six rods I carry rigged the same from spring to ice over.

I anguish more over where the fish will be as my time on the water has reduced significantly in the years since I retired. Spending two hours, with my eyes glued to the electronics, in an attempt to figure that out gives me nightmares.

Electronics changes everything for better and for worse.

Some days I long for the simplicity of bank fishing from the hundreds of lagoons (ponds) that I had to choose from when I lived back in SC.

Now, fishing on the big lakes there are almost too many choices and with that I spend too much time looking at my electronics. Maybe I should just pick a "fishy" looking spot and fish it out. When I fished the lagoons I would take the time and pick areas apart, but on the big lake it's run and gun.

Of course, the run part is a bit different on a pedal kayak. At a cruising speed of 3.2 mph I'm not getting anywhere fast.

I find that the more you stay on then as they shift around seasonally, the easier it is to guess where you should go.

We all probably have those days where we know where they are and how to catch them.... but our gut says go hit that bluff wall...and might as well see if there's a big on that point....it's against the rules to not pitch a jig into that line of timber on the adjacent channel swing.....etc

And then before you know it you are at your money spot and it's 1 hr til boat ramp closes and you catch one dink on the first cast just to make sure they're still there and then go home.

😭🤣

I actually am going fishing tomorrow.  I’m going to a lake north of me where I haven’t been in several months.  I’m gonna try for smallmouth.  I hope they are near some of their summer places.

I have 6 setups ready, 2 with jigs, 2 with shaky heads and 2 Ned rigs.  The will normally take one of those baits.  We will see.

Greetings All,

As I emerge from food coma, I am thinking about going fishing tomorrow. I hope each of you enjoyed Thanksgiving.

I aspire to keep things as simple as possible. Thus in looking at the weather forecast for the region it appears we are going to breezy to windy conditions for tomorrow. Those conditions will affect my selection of angling destination and approach. It is too windy to be on the water in my kayak so I’ll be fishing from shore as I want to do more casting rather than paddling.

I admit it is fun to consider a few options for my pending angling adventure. When it comes to tackle, I’ll stick to my low and slow theme for small soft plastic baits as that has proven successful at the busy urban community water. I’m not opposed to more dynamic baits, I’ve just not had a history of success at that location using crank baits or spinner baits.

I am hopeful my aspiration for an angling adventure will be realized and not interrupted by other responsibilities. We shall see. I’m hoping others who want to go fishing are able to as soon as possible. Gotta make the most of the fall fishing while you can. Be well and best fishes! Cheers!

My problem is that i need 3 more sets of arms. I could be throwing a spinnerbait above the weeds in 6 fow, a wacky senko to the dock, a deep jerk along the deep edge of the weeds, and a d/s a little further out..all at once.  #somanybaitssolittletime

Here too with snow.

And a bitter north with that will turn your head around.

We have transitioned over to our wintertime lake which is a power plant lake that never gets below 50 degrees here in Virginia in the winter months.  We have been fishing this body of water for so long, we have a progression that we go through and we usually find them somewhere along that run.  Baits are well known so there is no real thought process involved in what to bring.  There’s something about throwing a buzz bait in a snowstorm that makes me giggle like a little girl.  If we can get to the ramp, we can fish.  They are calling for a snowy winter this year so we will see if we get sidelined.  I towed my boat there (about an hour 1 way) and got caught in an ice event.  I never want to do that again.  We went Wednesday when it was low 50’s and we’re going tomorrow in the low 40’s.

We made it out.  It was a cold and windy day.  We struggled to catch a dozen bass.  All but 1 were caught on shaky with Houdini being a good color.

@ol'crickety it sure is a lot of fun.  It helps keep our sanity over the winter.  There’s something about being out in the cold but being toasty warm because you have the right gear and then being able to catch bass, striper, white perch, catfish, blue gill, crappie and even a rare walleye.  We’ll be heading off to Florida at the end of January and that is a great trip as well.  👍🏻

I asked myself one trip this year why I keep doing this sometimes couple times a week after all I'm just catching fish and over and over again every week why do it?  I really don't think we would do it if it were easy and weren't like a complex challenging puzzle and for some of us in the back of our minds the biggest fish in the lake and maybe a state record fish one trip.  Yes the challenge of selecting from our myriad of lure collections and setups to match the anticipated conditions and mood especially hard if theres no bass-boat deck allowing 8-10 rods and you fish from a small watercraft or from the bank.  Getting out there and sometimes having everything off but adjusting and rolling with the punches to recover or salvage a trip with a big fish.  Its what makes bass fishing so fun and rewarding!  ..and why at least speaking for myself why do it over and over and over ... and over again ;)

River levels are always where I start looking first. Than wind. After that it’s time of year to determine what my starting line up will be.

This  year the little bit I never really got on a crank bait bite. That had me slightly perplexed. The top water did come in. The Ned rig is almost always in for me. I had a killer day on a spinner bait.

sometimes the night before I just get that feeling it’s going to be great.
